So Sony instead of mining their own (or rather: Columbia's) vaults is re-re-re-issuing some RCA (used to be BMG) material, smart move... sure they'll sell loads and loads of this oh-so-new title!

Same as Brownie, I've got the Bluebird First Editions reissue.

I find some of the string arrangements on this album to be a bit of a drag, though Hawk's playing sounds fine. I'll probably get it someday, as I seem to be buying every damn Coleman Hawkins album lately.

I agree; to my ears this is not the most interesting stuff Hawkins has ever done :)

I've always had a soft spot for it because my sister gave it to me for a birthday present when it was new and I was hardly into jazz yet. Have no idea why she picked it and after 50 years I doubt if she remembers. IIRC one of teh songs is based on a riff he first used in one of the numbers he recorded with the Count Basie band.

Seems Legacy is also reissuing Someday My Prince will Come (Miles Davis, Columbia) and an RCA "Blues by Basie".

The worn LP cover look of these made me wonder if they were a continuation of that series that Sony France did a while ago. In any case, the whole lot are up for preorder on Amazon France, with a release date of September 6. The other titles are:

Take Ten by Paul Desmond

Cool (aka She Was Too Good To Me) by Chet Baker

Conquistador by Maynard Ferguson

Hope the new issue gives proper credit to Lee Friedlander who took the cover image on the original LP

Friedlander's name disappeared from the credits on the Bluebird reissue :excited:

Saw that one in a store yesterday - it's one of those cheapos with just one-fold booklets and no liners... nothing new about it I guess, just a cheap re-packing of an older, presumably OOP disc (others in the series include albums by Miles, Brubeck, Garner, Bill Evans etc).

And among the new ones that showed up was also a 2CD set of Mingus "Tijuana Moods" - hence presumably also the Bluebird First Editions version (the "right" one, there was an RCA Gold Series 2CD set that freaked up).
