Christiern Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 (edited) I have finally found out how to post audio to my blog, so I went into my closet and came out with some stuff that hasn't met any pair of ears in decades. My first audio post is 18 minutes of a Lonnie Johnson and Elmer Snowden appearance on my Philadelphia show, April 10, 1960. There is more to come from Lonnie and Elmer, also some jazz from the first WBAI marathon, including performances by Walter Bishop, Jr., Frank Haynes, Ronnie Matthews, Clifford Jordan, and Roy Burrows. I might even post "Blue Moon," as sung by A. B. Spellman. Y'all know how to Stomp off! I would appreciate comments, either here or there. Edited August 1, 2010 by Christiern Quote
Christiern Posted July 31, 2010 Author Report Posted July 31, 2010 I have just added a solo performance by pianist Ronnie Matthews. Quote
papsrus Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 (edited) Just started listening now to the Matthews, Chris. Beautiful. Thank you. EDIT: ... and now the Lonnie Johnson-Elmer Snowden. This may actually get me to run down to Bestbuy and grab some speakers for my laptop. Great stuff. Edited July 31, 2010 by papsrus Quote
paul secor Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 I await A.B. Spellman's vocalising with much anticipation. Quote
Christiern Posted July 31, 2010 Author Report Posted July 31, 2010 Thank you, mjzee. I forgot to mention that I will also be posting some of my interviews, raw—in the unpolished sense—encounters with people like Jimmy Rushing, Cannonball, Miles, Lil Armstrong, Billie Holiday (if I can find it), and many others. king ubu Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Playing the Lonnie Johnson/Elmer Snowden now - very nice, Chris, thanks a lot for sharing! Quote
brownie Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 (edited) Liked the Ronnie Mathews 'Prelude to a Kiss'. Waiting for that Walter Bishop, Frank Haynes, etc... Whenever you want, Chris! I remember visiting the WBAI studios back in 1967 (I have photos somewhere). Interesting visit. Edited August 2, 2010 by brownie Quote
Don Brown Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 (edited) Hey you guys, Ronnie Mathews had only one T in his surname. I remember asking him about the odd spelling when he was playing solo piano at the Montreal Bistro here in Toronto. He told me that no one spells his name correctly. Judging from this thread I guess he was was right. Edited August 1, 2010 by Don Brown Quote
bertrand Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Frank Haynes? Not exactly an oft-recorded figure. I like his playing on that Grant Green record that is not really a Grant Green record. He's not related to Roy, is he? Looking forward to hearing that one. Bertrand. Quote
Christiern Posted August 1, 2010 Author Report Posted August 1, 2010 Frank Haynes passed away a couple of years after helping us out at WBAI. I will be posting that soon, in the meantime, I have just posted an unusual interview. It's Duke, posing as a rep for Ralph J. Gleason, interviewing Billy Strayhorn. Quote
AllenLowe Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Xanadu put out an LP with Haynes on it, as I recall - it might have been with Walter Bishop, I'm not sure. Quote
Don Brown Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 That was Bish Bash - Xanadu 114. It has five titles by Walter Bishop's trio plus three quartet titles with Frank Haynes from a date recorded live at the Half Note. Quote
Christiern Posted August 22, 2010 Author Report Posted August 22, 2010 I just added another Ronnie Matthews performance, Dorian, with Michael Fleming on bass and J.C. Moses, drums. I have one more Matthews piece to post, a blues. Then it's on to something different, a 1962 recording from Scranton Pennsylvania. It was Christmas week, the snow was piled high and a bunch of us squeezed into Ray Bryant's station wagon very early in the morning. Elmer Snowden, Herman Autrey, Budd Johnson, Tommy Bryant and Jo Jones—I was the MC and Perl Bailey's sister, Eura, was the vocalist. I'll post that next week. Quote
