HUGE fan here. She does exactly what I've always thought good pop music could and should be.

"Only you" take5?

....good pop music could and should be....

are there other recordings, of which you would say that?

pet sounds?

no one else listening to janelle monae?????

I like the video to Tightrope, I think it is - I saw her in April at the EMP conference, nice girl, smart, and very involved with the community. Into some older stuff as well, James Brown, etc.

Saw her live a few days ago, I'm still in awe, she's a beast on stage, glad to saw her in a relatively small venue (2000 people), she's one hit away from doing only arena shows with price tickets at 150 $

Amazing dancer, she glides all over the place like a movie special effect , great artistic vision and influences (JB, Prince, Outkast etc.) with a very solid ensemble of musicians and back up singers , very good singer with plenty of charisma, the total package...

I am a homer (she is from KC), but I have seen her several times and agree with you 100% ... just a sensational show and artist :tup

Question for any of my fellow Kansas Citians: Did she come up as a performer in KC? If so, what venue(s) did she ever perform in (in and around KC), assuming she was ever a local artist in KC.

I'm assuming she was long gone by the time I caught wind of her a couple years ago (back when I still lived in KC, having moved to Washington DC about a year ago).

You know Tom I think you are correct. Being a boring middle-aged dude with three kids, I was not exactly keen on the scene, but allmusic suggests she left KC after high school, circa 2004. I first saw her maybe 3-4 years ago, and it was not part of some club stint, she just happened to be passing through town (as a back-up act and damn if I can recall who was the opener).

Most recently I saw her at the Independence Event Center, opening for (ugh) Bruno Mars. Maybe 1/3 of the crowd were hardcore Monae fans, but quite a few of the teenyboppers who were there to see Mars seemed to take to her as well. Regardless, she put on one hell of a show, one of the four-five best I have ever seen.

I was really impressed with ArchAndroid, myself. (especially the first half of the album)

"Cold War" knocked me out. And this video is amazing - just a closeup of her face, but it's hypnotic. I've must have watched it at least 50 times.
