ERROLL GARNER

Concert By The Sea

cover+concert-cd.jpg

Erroll Garner's Concert By The Sea is one of those records that should be in any record collection. It became, although recorded on a simple reel-to-reel tape recorder - the sound quality was not good at all, a million seller in the 1950s. Concert By The Sea is a flawed monument of perfection. This recording was a dichotomy, a paradox, where the unlearned not only prevail, but create art of a lasting quality. This is the art. ( Michael Bailey)

Thank you for the thread Hans and the link to your site (excellent restrospective). Unfortunately, I never picked up this disc -- don't know why -- but I'll have to look for it if I can.

We just released a tribute recording to Erroll. We had a great time putting it together and hopefully we will be doing more. The player, Ernie Edwards has been playing Garner and Shearing for years. He's been blind since birth! It's on iTunes, Napster or our site, www.visionventures.ning.com. Video clips are on vimeo as well.

Good LP. I have an old mono Columbia six-eye that I picked up very cheap. I haven't ever heard it on CD so I don't know which newer mastering is better.
