Chalupa Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 The race is over now. Contador is the winner for the third time. Great rider! Great Tour! Yellow jersey Alberto Contador and his teammates sip champagne on the final stage of this year's Tour. This just went out on Twitter..... Alberto Contador tested positive for clenbuterol at the Tour de France.http://twitter.com/BicyclingMagMore... http://www.bicycling.com/news/pro-cycling/contador-reveals-positive-test Quote
brownie Posted September 30, 2010 Author Report Posted September 30, 2010 Contador will have a lot of explaining to do at his press conference later today. Good roundup story by Juliet Macur in The New York Times today Contador Quote
Claude Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 (edited) Given that the amount of clenbuterol found is 400 times less than normal doping tests can detect, I think contamination is the most likely cause, and Contador shouldn't be punished for that. Very recently, a german table tennis player was tested positive on clenbuterol too after having played in China. That sport hardly benefits from muscle building. Banned drug ‘Clenbuterol’ puts two players in hot waters. Contador's contaminated food: excuse or possibility? Edited September 30, 2010 by Claude Quote
Brad Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 This just never ends does it? For the sake of the sport I hope it is just a food contamination problem. Quote
brownie Posted September 30, 2010 Author Report Posted September 30, 2010 (edited) Contador refutes the charges at his press conference. As Claude noted earlier today, he also pointed that the 'infinitely small amount of the substance found in his urine sample,... could not have in any case had an effect on his performance'. T.D. Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 (edited) Now there's a report that the Vuelta runner-up tested positive. Edited September 30, 2010 by T.D. Quote
Lyin' Wolf Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 Another theory Contaminated food, or tainted blood transfusion? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 Either are possible, but IMO the trace amounts shouldn't be admitted as evidence now. Quote
Claude Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 The blood transfusion theory is interesting, because unlike the minimal Clenbuterol consumption (detected only once), it could be a sign of effective doping. Quote
Lyin' Wolf Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 From New York Post: Experts mixed on Contador's tainted beef defense Some quotes from the article: Howard Jacobs, a Los Angeles attorney who has represented more than 75 athletes facing anti-doping infractions, helped American Olympic swimmer Jessica Hardy get her two-year ban halved after arguing in arbitration that her positive Clenbuterol test was the result of contaminated supplements. Jacobs said if Contador can prove there was contaminated meat somewhere (Clenbuterol is sometimes used in veterinary practices), then the contaminated-food argument might be more persuasive to members of an arbitration panel than a contaminated-supplement defense, because the dangers of nutritional supplements are well-advertised. "It's not a stretch to say there's no way he could imagine that the steak he was eating was contaminated," said Jacobs. And from the other side: But Lewis Maharam, a former president of the New York chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine, is among the skeptics, pointing out that food-borne Clenbuterol would have to have survived not just cooking but the metabolism of the tainted cattle, not to mention Contador's system. I'm confused. Is the beef from Spain that much better than beef from France? Quote
Claude Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 Some experts have said that no Clenbuterol has been detected in spanish beef since 1999. Quote

Brad Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 These athletes are just plain stupid, thinking they'll never be caught. This meat story is also a very convenient but well conceived story; it can't be disproven. Quote
paul secor Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 Sounds like a story that was cooked up (no pun intended) in case he got caught. Quote
Lyin' Wolf Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 (edited) Not looking good for Contador. Plasticisers 8 times over the level associated with doping found in a urine sample taken 7/20 - the day before the clenbuterol sample taken Plasticisers Edited October 5, 2010 by Lyin' Wolf Quote

I personally think caring about sports is pretty foolish. I would consider it harmless, except for the excessive government funding spent to subsidize stadiums along with tax breaks these teams get -- to say nothing of the truly obscene levels of government funding for the Olympics, World Cup, Commonwealth Games, etc. Quote

Claude Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 (edited) Very recently, a german table tennis player was tested positive on clenbuterol too after having played in China. That sport hardly benefits from muscle building. Banned drug ‘Clenbuterol’ puts two players in hot waters. The german table tennis player Dimitrij Ovtcharov has now been cleared of doping, as meat contamination was thought to be the most plausible reason for clenbuterol to be found. http://www.digibet.info/topnewsgbtease/00_20101015221126_Ovtcharov_case_sets_precedent.php Contador's case is different of course, but he could use the Ovtcharov decision for his defense.
