undergroundagent Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Just curious about everyone's favs and reasons why. Mine is, of course, Larry Young. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Toss up between the Capitol Jazz set, just because of the sheer variety (plus Kay Starr!!) and the Gerry Mulligan, probably because it's the newest. We'll see... Quote
Big Al Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Just one? How do I pick between the Hill, the Rivers, and the Byrd/Adams sets? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 I think most of you can guess which one is my current favorite!! Quote
brownie Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Herbie Nichols! 'cause it brought so much more beautiful music than what was available from this artist when the box came out. Quote
BFrank Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Impossible to pick a "favorite". I have pretty much the same sets that most people have (Hill, Larry Young, Morgan, McLean, Rivers, Gerald Wilson, Blakey and Fuller) but the one that I seem to keep coming back to is the Thad Jones 3CD set. It's just a great set of music! Quote
Free For All Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 I love 'em all. The Mulligan has been the most recent source of listening pleasure, but my all time favorite is the first one I bought, the Thad/Mel. The sound w/o that bizarre reverb is outstanding- you can hear every part clearly. Of course, there's the Larry Young.......and the Blakey.............and the JJ......and Curtis.......and Woody..........and the other Woody.....nope, it's still Thad. Quote
vibes Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 The Andrew Hill set is definitely my favorite. The Jackie McLean, Grachan Moncur and Byrd/Adams sets are also honorable mentions. Quote
jlhoots Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 No one's mentioned the Mobley so I will. Lots of other great ones of course. Quote
John Tapscott Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 I would have to go with Free For All on this one - The Thad/Mel set is the one I would keep if I could only keep one. What 5 after that - The Basie live, the Thad small groups, the Mobley, the Mulligan Concert Band, the McLean, & the Kenton Holman/Russo charts Oh, that's six, probably I would scratch off the Thad small groups. It's great but too short (only 3 discs!) Quote
wolff Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Mingus / 1959 CBS If I could only keep one this would be it. Quote
Brad Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Stitt, Mobley and Blakey but I'd remiss if I didn't put in a vote for the HRS Sessions. That's a fantastic box. Not to be confused with favorite is the question of what's the best. I don't have the set but it would have to be the Commodore Sets. Quote
shawn·m Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 For me, it’s probably between the Blakey and Mobley, or maybe the Hodges. Then there’s the Rivers… Quote
GA Russell Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Paul Desmond. I still play every disc a great deal, so I doubt I'll ever get tired of any of it. It's great to relax by or to drive on the highway by. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 So many great ones. . . the Pops. . . the Capitol. . . the HRS. . . the Charlie Parker. . . the Herbie Nichols. . . and others. . . . Maybe I'd say the Parker or the Capitol. The former is just such a huge effort and so important. The Capitol has such a variety of great music in great sound that is hard or impossible to find on cd elsewhere. . . Quote
BruceH Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Right now the Morgan/Shorter. I seem to come back to it the most. The Mobley's right up there, of course, as are about 10 others. Quote
montg Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 Based purely on amount of playing time, I'd say probably the Turrentine. I don't really hear the problems with the sound that others have mentioned... every disc is filled with great music. Can't get enought of Mr T. Honerable mention to the Condons. Quote
bary01 Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Solid State sessions !! Quote
Alfred Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 Both Johnny Hodges sets, Chico Hamilton (yes, yes!), J.J. Johnson, Shorty Rogers, Andrew Hill, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Giuffre, Blue Mitchell, Gerry Mulligan, ... Only ONE favorite - impossible!!! Quote
marcoliv Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 right now i would say the Mobley set... but i change my opinion oftenly... Marcus Oliveira Quote
sal Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 I like the J.J Johnson set the most. So much high quality, hard swinging music in different settings. Its wonderful. Quote
Z-Man Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 Jackie Mac LP set. I never grow tired of it. Killer playing by all involved. Quote
Upright Bill Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 Paul Chambers, one of the gods of Jazz Bass! Quote
chris Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 Can't believe no one has mentioned the Curtis Fuller set, which is-- I think-- underrated... Quote
king ubu Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 very hard to choose just one! some favorites include: Thad Jones Capitol Mobley Tristano/Konitz/Marsh Jimmy Giuffre Jackie Mac Andrew Hill Tina Brooks H.R.S. J.J. Jones/Lewis hell, I like ALL of 'em - err, that's: I like all I have so far... Quote
