Big Beat Steve Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 Some untrodden Blue Note paths here: My first Grant Green: The Latin Bit with Ike Quebec, Johnny Acea, Sonny Clark, Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo, Carlos Valdez, Garvn Masseaux (with bonus tracks, hence the presence of Ike and Sonny). Quote
colinmce Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 Ike Quebec - Blue and Sentimental. Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers appear on the bulk of the record, but the CD features another cut from that knot of sessions by Grant Green, Sonny Clark, Louis Hayes and Sam Jones. Quote

Dan Gould Posted June 29, 2010 Author Report Posted June 29, 2010 First Tyner came at a time I was even buying cassettes: with Elvin and Art Davis Quote
BillF Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 Joe Henderson - Inner Urge with McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Bob Cranshaw. My first Tyner (which I no longer have) was with Elvin Jones and Ron Carter. Quote
colinmce Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 I'll follow Dan with Art Davis - Life with Pharoah Sanders, John Hicks and Idris Mohammed. One of the most underrated bassists there is. I'll buy anything with him on it. Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 29, 2010 Author Report Posted June 29, 2010 Not a Sanders fan but this one was close enough to Prestige-era Coltrane to work for me: Quote
mjzee Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 My first Pharaoh: John Hicks, Ray Drummond, Idris Muhammad, Eddie Henderson (Idris could get us into disco territory, if anyone's up for it.) Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 30, 2010 Author Report Posted June 30, 2010 Is Hicks a dead end or have we lost interest? I think I'll correct my last post with what I now realize was definitely an earlier Hicks purchase, and also just happens to have lots of options going forward: With Clark Terry, Josh Redman, Al Grey, Ron Carter, Greg Gisbert and Grady Tate. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 My first John Hicks album was 1979's "After the Morning", on the West 54 label. He is joined by Walter Booker and Cliff Barbaro. I cannot find an online image of the cover. Quote
Noj Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 With Harold Vick, Roland Prince, and Eddie Gomez Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 The first title with Eddie Gomez I bought could have been either of these BASE reissues: The Giuseppi Logan Quartet (ESP) w/ Don Pullen and Milford Graves OR Paul Bley "Barrage" (ESP) w/ Marshall Allen, Graves, and Dewey Johnson as well. Got 'em both on the same day. Quote
mjzee Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 My first Paul Bley album was "The Fabulous Paul Bley Quintet" on America (aka Live at the Hillcrest Club). Ornette, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins. Or I could go for the big kahuna: my first album with Giuseppi Logan, Paul Bley, and many many others was "The ESP Sampler." Bought for a big 99 cents at King Karol on 42nd Street in 1970, it had 30-second snippets of most ESP albums. Quote
