Patricia,

Actually I haven't been following this discussion as closely as I should be if I'm going to be making any comments. My bad. I just assumed that it was more along the lines of what Dan said, that it was more about the online friendships you all have fostered since before this website existed.

We'd love to play for y'all. It would be a blast. But where? We almost never play in Lansing, believe it or not. It's tough to get a gig in this town if you're not a vocal/blues band. There is one venue that we could rent (or perhaps book a ticketed performance at), and it would be a great place to hang as well: Creole Gallery. That just might work.

Well, that would be fun, and it would provide a focal point for such a gathering. Which would be a nessesity because, frankly, there's not much else going on in Lansing.

Discuss.... ^_^

Joe, you have to understand that I had barely heard of Lansing, before I started posting on this board.

Lansing sounds a lot like Calgary, except for the blues part. We have sports and country bars and clubs, out the ying-yang and maybe a half-dozen or so clubs which feature jazz [now that Kaos closed] and that's only once a week or so. VERY depressing for me, as you might guess. There are some local jazz musicians and singers who interested me and I am gradually composing a photo essay of them, performing, using available light, which is slow going, but gettin' there.

So, whatever is possible from your end, with regard to what form this hang will take would be terrific. You're right. Meeting the posters is the main thing and I have been known to drink the odd beer, although my tipple is medium priced wine, for medicinal purposes of course. I will have to pass on the chasing chicks aspect, for obvious reasons.

Creole Gallery sounds like a great starting point. We will make this happen because it IS a good idea. :D

I voted for St. Louis ... aside from the fact that I could road trip over with Rooster :P , there might be a good opportunity for a side trip to the wonderful Euclid Records, one of the best jazz record shops in the US.

See, this is the reason why a serious metropolitan area like St. Louis (or Chicago for that matter) would be the better choice.

And dare I say it again, a meeting of the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors, complete with two day jazz and blues record/cd sale, sounds like the ultimate time to try to get together, as long as enough people are able to go in mid-June. I'm sure there will be other hangs, but how can we pass up St. Louis in June???

Hmmm....., Chicago...

Hmmm, indeed! The Jazz Record Mart... hmmm. My sister-in-law is the GM of the four-story Borders there on Michigan Ave.... but what can I say, I'm a slut for any of these places, given that they're all only several hours away. It would be cool to congregate during the Jazz Festival & cheer on Organissimo, too, if they get the gig.

The website shows that last year's Festival was the last weekend in August, I'd imagine its the same or similar for the next one.

When will you guys know if you got the gig? I think this would be an awesome way to get together, even if the heat will be brutal.

A Floridian complaining of heat? What's up with that Dan? ;)

I don't know when they make their final decisions about the lineup, but we will pass that on as soon as we know.

as already noted elsewhere, the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors is having its convention in St. Louis in June. Dealers and collectors from all over the world selling, trading lps, CDs etc. synergy

The fistival is usually on Labor Day Weekend, but not including Labor Day Monday!!! Usually Thur, Fri, Sat and Sunday. I road trip for the festival every year plus the Jazz Record Mart, The Jazz Showcase (after fest jam is great) and good eats abound! I'm still in for St. Louis in any event. If the band plays the Festival, I'll be there also.

Dan,

I would love to have some of our international boardmembers show up, but the truth is that they likely won't. In fact, we are unlikely to get many East or West coast members to show up as well.

Pushing St. Louis as the venue on that basis is quite silly. Neither place would likely attract people from far away. And no matter how great Euclid Records might be, it won't be very great if we get 25 avid jazz collectors buying out the place in one weekend.

My vote is for Lansing and we get to hear Organissimo play.

August in Chicago, assuming that Organissimo gets the gig would be good for me.

On checking my atlas [yes, I do have one], I see that it is just below Manitoba, which is two provinces over from where I am. I'm looking at around 1500 miles or so.

I'm not sure what the logistics are, airwise, from here to Chicago. Usually they have us flying all over hell's half acre, making connections, increasing the chances of this humble scribe wandering forever in some airport. But, that would happen no matter where this thing ends up being held.

So, assuming that Organissimo is successful in the Chicago bid, we're looking at late August?? As for the heat, don't be such a wuss. There are worse things to be than too warm, believe me. :o

If they, God forbid, [as my grandmother used to say] don't get the gig, is there a tentative Plan B??

BTW, the vote totals so far is an amazing tie!!

Although I voted for Lansing, I really thought St. Louis would run away with it given it's a bigger city.

I guess all the Organissimos voted for Lansing which helped. :)

AND we're so poll-rules-abiding that everyone who voted [including me, for Lansing] only voted once. :D

As for St Louis being more likely, because it's bigger, we can only take up so much space, no matter where it is.:D

Errr, Patty, the board software only allows us to vote once.

I would have voted a dozen times for Lansing if I could get away with it. ;):g:ph34r:

If you can still vote on your screen, then YOU HAVEN'T VOTED YET, Patty!!

You know, I didn't try to vote more than once, because I am a poll-rules-abiding poster. :D

I'm assuming that you know for other reasons??

Well we'd have to have a private concert for y'all because we do not get any gigs in Lansing. We play in Grand Radpis (1 hr. west of Lansing), Ann Arbor (1 hr. east of Lansing), Holland (1 1/2 hrs. from Lansing) etc. But no gigs in Lansing.

Lansing is dull. Great place to raise kids (nothing happens)... not a good place for artists.

If I might chime in at this point, I think the spirit of the Lansing idea was to catch the band at one of their gigs, support the venue, live jazz, and Organissimo as well. Speaking only for myself, I have a distinct lack of knowledge of the geography of Michigan and figured, without looking at a map, that Lansing would be somewhere near your gigs. Now that I have found out differently, It seems like Ann Arbor makes it all the easier. It's stone's throw from Detroit. Yahoo Maps says it 43 miles or 51 minutes of travel time from Detroit and only 24 miles or 30 minutes travel time from the Detroit Airport. I guess it depends on where you stay.

Detroit has a great art museum and baseball for those who are sticking around a few days and I would guess on the radar screen of most major airlines. I would think that somewhere in or around Detroit you could catch some more live jazz and of course for those inclined, there's gambling in the casino.
