I suddenly, unexpectedly and very excitingly have beads on the last two Gene Harris recordings I lack. Both were recorded in Japan with Ray Brown. One I am confident I'll enjoy as the trio is backing a pretty swinging vibes player named Takashi Ohi (it showed up early this year as a CD On-Demand offering but apparently Japan only -fortunately the website has audio links and it certainly doesn't sound like an amateur playing with Gene and Ray, so I am definitely ordering this).

The other one though I am not certain about because its with a vocalist - Junko Mine. Any familiar with her? I can only find one youtube video where she sings "Amazing Grace" and its not really that appealing but its also given a rather reverent (natch) performance so maybe this isn't the best she can do. So any advice on her vocal talents is appreciated.

Thanks in advance ...

Better late then never -

Junko Mine recorded a very very nice album with Thad Jones and Mel Lewis...somewhere in the 70s.

Not their bigband, but an intimate, swinging quartet setting...

On some spots she sounds fairly close to the later outings of Chris Connor...

Highly recommended album...Issued on cd in Japan...

Not sure if it's still available, but chances are big that it has seen a recent reissue...

Title: A Child Is Born.

Any relation to saxophonist Kohsuke Mine?

Junko's name came up on a cdjapan search once. I had the same question, and tried to research it but got nowhere.

they were born about a year apart in different prefectures, and the saxophonist changed his last name (by adoption or parental marriage?) to Mine. But they could be related through the latter. Who knows. It doesn't really matter, but I am curious.
