webbcity Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 (edited) Hi, just a quick question for anyone who might have this CD... First off, there are actually two totally different Tolliver albums called "Impact"...one on Strata-East with a big band, and another on Enja with a quartet, which is the one I'm concerned with (pictured here: http://www.enjarecords.com/cd.php?nr=ENJ-2109 ). My question is: the original LP of this record contained lead sheets for one or more of the tunes (I know this not because I have it, but because I saw one on ebay)...does the CD reissue have the lead sheet(s) too? I know they would be tiny, but it's been done before (see: Steve Swallow - The Real Book). Thanks in advance for any help with this! Edited June 15, 2010 by webbcity Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Dunno... a fair amount of those early Enja LPs had lead sheets printed on the back, which is/was cool. Quote
webbcity Posted June 15, 2010 Author Report Posted June 15, 2010 (edited) There's also a Japanese mini-LP version of this on CD...I suppose that would probably have the lead sheet if in fact it's an accurate replica. It's amazing how much confusion there is on the web between these two albums...I keep finding the cover for one combined with the track listing for the other Impact, plus links that lead to the wrong album, etc... Had Mr. Tolliver known about the internet in the 70s he probably would have come up with a different title for one of them. Edited June 15, 2010 by webbcity Quote
Kyo Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 There's the lead sheet for the title track on the back of the digipack and another track (very hard to read as it's small and the printed in white on a bluish, background) on the back of the cover page. Quote

Thanks! Hmmm...I may just get the CD, it's certainly easier to find & probably cheaper than the vinyl at this point. Thanks for checking that, I really appreciate it. Quote
Niko Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 you can see the backcover here: http://www.amazon.de/Impact-Enja24bit-Charles-Tolliver/dp/B000FGGBJI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276639446&sr=8-1 Quote

I think the whie on blue of the inlay could easily be changed with some software... but I wonder: are these two short bits actually the complete "lead sheets" of these two songs? Will have to check them out while playing the disc next time! Quote
Niko Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 (edited) just learned that i can hardly read these things anymore.. that said, my feeling is, that those ten bars on the back of the cd indeed contain most (!) of the information needed to play "Impact" (the tune) and the size is large enough to read it with some concentration; in the inlay with the blue ground is Stanley Cowell's "Prayer For Peace", harder to read, doubt that photoshop will help, rather making an own copy and that filling gaps by ear... most of the notes can be read and having the meter changes will sure be helpful; less sure whether this is complete since its hard to follow with all the repetitions but 80% sure it's the whole theme played by Tolliver with chords Edited June 16, 2010 by Niko Quote

Niko Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 (edited) As in "your eyes are too bad" or as in "you're not used to read music anymore"? luckily just the second! so my findings here should be taken with two or three grains of salt... Edited June 16, 2010 by Niko Quote
king ubu Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 I see... I'll give it a try as soon as I find time (no time for lots of music or new Coltrane posts until weekend...) Quote
