Bright Moments Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 I'm a fan! How about you? This one is one of my favorites! Quote
mjzee Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 Very intelligent player. I've enjoyed everything I've heard of his. I like his work with Milt Jackson. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 I like his work with Milt Jackson. Yes, but I haven't got much. More Jackson/Harris, actually. Some nice stuff on some Jamaican albums, too, as I recollect. MG Quote
neveronfriday Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 (edited) I'm a huge fan of Monty Alexander, but he happens to be one of the (many) artists (like Oscar Peterson) I have learned not to chime in on here because I (and others) usually get a lot of flak for just having said so. I have, in no particular order (favorites are bold): 01) The Monty Alexander Trio Live! at the Montreux Festival. 02) Monty Alexander Plays the Songy of Tony Bennett. 03) Monty Alexander Live at the Iridium. 04) Monty Alexander - Goin' Yard. 05) Monty Alexander - Stir It Up 06) Monty Alexander - Caribbean Circle 07) Monty Alexander - Facets 08) The Monty Alexander Quintet - Mory & Steel 09) Monty Alexander - Alexander the Great - Monty Swings on MPS 10) Monty Alexander - Ray Brown - Herb Ellis - Triple Treat II 11) Monty Alexander - Ray Brown - Herb Ellis - Triple Scoop (Triple Treat I, II and III) 12) Monty Alexander - Ray Brown - Herb Ellis - Straight Ahead (Trio & Overseas Special) plus a bunch of downloads of rare material. Yeah, I'm missing a ton. :/ Two things I love about his style: a) his percussive approach at times and b) the dynamic and explosive swing he can knock out. Cheers! Edit: P.S. I just noticed that I have more that are filed under "Ray Brown" in my collection. Too lazy to get those now. Edited May 30, 2010 by neveronfriday Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 Edit: P.S. I just noticed that I have more that are filed under "Ray Brown" in my collection. Too lazy to get those now. I like Monty just fine but I wouldn't be the former GHF if I didn't say that I wish Ray had brought Gene out of retirement sooner so that those Ray & Monty recordings might be Ray & Gene instead. I'm also a big fan of Gene Harris. What I said above also applies to him. Actually, I think I have more Gene Harris recordings than Monty Alexander ones. Quote
kh1958 Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 I saw him perform with his trio at a local university a couple of years ago. It was an enjoyable concert, but on record I mostly just have him with Milt Jackson. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 I had the World Pacific debut (I think it was WP, not PJ), it was sold in the great purge. Was there more than one on Bock's labels? Quote
JSngry Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 (not the same as the MPS album of the same name...) & Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 (edited) Yeah, I owned the first one, got the other as a CDR from Bill iirc. Not sure why I thought the first one was a WP and not a PJ. Edited May 31, 2010 by Dan Gould Quote
JSngry Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 How are they? They were both in those big ol' ginormous Longview, Tx Treasure City cutout bins in the early '70s. Quote
JSngry Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 This one looks interesting: Monty Alexander, Ernest Ranglin, Eberhard Weber, and Kenny Clare! 1. S.K.J. 2. Summer Of ‘42 3. Now Is The Time 4. You Are The Sunshine Of My Life 5. Feel Like Making Love 6. On A Clear Day Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Kenny Clare isn't a misspelling - English drummer. Quote
JSngry Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Yeah, I know him well...I'm just tripping on the overall combination...Ernest Raglin & Eberhard Weber playing "On A Clear Day" w/Monty Alexander! Quote
cymbalgroove Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Monty used to come to my house for dinner and hanging out when I was a kid. Fond memories of him really groovin on my Dad's record collection. Quote
