I have downloaded shows from David Binney's website, Chris Tarry's website, and Pete Robbins website. Each of these guys have gigs available for $4-$6 for mp3's of a nights work. I know Steve Coleman has (or at least has had) a lot available at his site. Can anyone recommend or otherwise direct me to other artist sites where recordings of gigs are available?

Thanks.

Darcy James Argue's Secret Society has a ton of gigs available for free download at http://www.secretsocietymusic.org/darcy_james_argues_secret/

You can find a lot of free live material from the Zappa-friendly Ed Palermo Big Band at http://www.palermobigband.com/

Bill Frisell has a live download series for sale, including a terrific John Lennon tribute set (#005) at http://www.billfrisell.com/

Dave Holland has started selling downloads of live sets (one so far) and other recordings on his Dare2 label at http://www.daveholland.com/

I wish Wayne Shorter would offer downloads of shows for purchase on a website since he seems to not be going into the studio anymore.

Bertrand.

Yeah, it's going to be hard to hear the music that he premiered at the PMA otherwise.

Thanks for the responses, I had forgotten about the material at James Darcy Argue's site, which is free. I see that Bobby Previte also offers FLAC downloads, same price as mp3. I've finally come around to not automatically dismissing mp3, although I still prefer lossless or at least a high bit rate. I wish more more musicians would post their stuff.

Just looked at one of the Mel Sparks' downloads. Looks like you have to download each track individually and they're about 80-90mb each! I suppose this means they're very good quality recordings or something.

In addition, there are some other things on the page that I don't understand:

Information Format Size

msb2002-06-14.md5 Checksums 1.00 KB

Other Files

msb2002-06-14.shnf_files.xml 5.88 KB

msb2002-06-14.shnf_meta.xml 3.33 KB

msb2002-06-14.shnf_reviews.xml 179 B

Do I need to download thses things? What are they?

you can choose between different formats, at least on this one

http://www.archive.org/details/msb2005-06-19.flac

i just looked at... if you just want low quality mp3s for instance, you can take the files from column "64Kbps MP3" which are only about 5MB each;

next level is "VBR MP3" and so on; if you download msb2005-06-19.flac_vbr_mp3.zip you have just one file in the higher mp3 quality; don't think you need those additional files (you certainly won't if you go for mp3)

if you don't want to bother with downloading you can also just play them online in the upper right corner...

just saw some of the older shows don't have that many choices... no idea about shn files, i doubt you need the little ones though!

i would guess that whenever there is useful info in the textfile, it's already given on the page when ou scroll down (like on the one i linked to it says

Melvin Sparks - guitar

Jerry Z - Hammond B3 organ

Justin Tomsovic - drums

iirc i once looked through them all and didn't spot big names - but then i guess in your soul jazz book there are more big names than in mine

guess you have to rely on annoucements for the early shows...
