david weiss Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 I just heard Edgar Bateman passed away. I never met him or played with him but heard about him often from Philadelphia guys and they always told me what a great drummer he was and that he was still on top of his game, way on top of his game. Quite the unsung musician..... Quote
umum_cypher Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 I just heard Edgar Bateman passed away. I never met him or played with him but heard about him often from Philadelphia guys and they always told me what a great drummer he was and that he was still on top of his game, way on top of his game. Quite the unsung musician..... They were right. I interviewed him and heard him in 2001, and 2003 I think, and he was very supple indeed. He wasn't overly busy at all, but there was so much going on (polyrhythmically, timbrally) I got the impression he wouldn't have been easy to play with. I think the people I watched him playing with were having that impression too. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Dang, very sorry to hear this news. RIP. Quote
Chalupa Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 So sad. I was fortunate to see him play many times here in Philly. He was a regular attender at many shows. I never saw him not wearing a suit and tie. Old school. http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=16250 Quote

king ubu Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Wanted to play some Walt Dickerson anyway... will turn into a memorial listen, I'm afraid. Also Bateman was fine on that United Artist album by Ken McIntyre with strings! My condolences to the family. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Also Bateman was fine on that United Artist album by Ken McIntyre with strings! That's exactly the session that came to mind when I read this - and it's on my LP listening schedule tonight ('Way Way Out'). Sorry to hear this, always enjoyed his playing. RIP. Quote

skangadang Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 My condolences for you and your family Edgar. He is one of the truly great musicians, and watching him play the brushes was like watching master figure skaters dance on the ice. Thank you Mr. Bateman. Quote
agriffith Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Mr. Bateman played beautifully on those Dave Burns Vanguard lps, and with Walt Dickerson of course. I wish he had been recorded more. Joey DeFrancesco talked highly of him many times. Peace and blessings to his family. RIP Quote
randyhersom Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Thanks for joining us Edgar. The two tours of duty with Walt Dickerson produced music that will last through the ages, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We're all thinking of you and your family. Quote
