crisp Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 I know this series has been discussed before, but I couldn't find a dedicated thread. Anyway, after a lot of pop sets, there are some more jazz-themed releases coming on 29 June, in the new three-CD format. Artists are Ahmad Jamal, Sylvain Luc, Michel Petrucciani, Steve Grossman, Didier Lockwood and Bireli Lagrene. Amazon search string here. Quote
king ubu Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 The thread is here, had to use google to find it - neither "original" nor "album" is in its title: Quote
crisp Posted May 6, 2010 Author Report Posted May 6, 2010 No, that's the similar series from Warner -- Original Album Series, not Original Album Classics from Sony. It's confusing. Quote
king ubu Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 I know there are two series, but both were discussed and linked to in the previous thread. Was there yet another one? Quote
Niko Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 since it says three cds - unless there is a mistake, these should differ drom the existing Lagrene and Petruciani sets... wonder what the Steve Grossman will be... Quote
Niko Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 we wondered about that as well in the other thread... looks like some sort of distribution deal (since at least the marcus miller mixes dreyfus and non-dreyfus albums iirc) Quote
Niko Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 the grossman set has (not surprisingly) three albums: Do it, with Barry Harris/Reggie Johnson/Art Taylor Small Hotel with Cedar Walton/David Williams/Billy Higgins Quartet with Petrucciani, with Michel Petrucciani/Andy McKee/Joe Farnsworth looks good to me... Quote
king ubu Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 I only know the Petrucciani - not that exciting. "Time to Smile" with Tom Harrell and Elvin, as well as the dirty trio live recording one with Art Taylor are better, in my opinion. Haven't come around to listen to the Grossman/Griffin set yet. These 3CD sets are also available from Sony/BMG artists, I think - partly even from some I think that also have 5CD sets out. Not sure of overlap, but the 3CD didn't seem to be priced very attractively, so I didn't look around the web too much. From the Rhino sets, I got the Dr. John, the Warren Zevon and the Otis Redding. Only played the Dr. John so far - it misses "Remedies", but otherwise it's fabulous! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 These sets make it difficult for smaller companies selling new music or reissues of neglected music. They can do these "cheap" sets because of artfully written contracts and the power of mass. Quote
king ubu Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 I can see that - however I'd consider Dreyfus a small label, too, no? Or is there any affiliation with SonyBMGTimeWarnerEMI there? In the other thread when I asked the answer was no, but what do I know... Quote
mjzee Posted July 12, 2010 Report Posted July 12, 2010 If anyone doesn't have the first 5 Mahavishnu Orchestra albums, this price is too crazy to pass up... $7.76 for all 5: Amazon Quote
Quincy Posted July 12, 2010 Report Posted July 12, 2010 If anyone doesn't have the first 5 Mahavishnu Orchestra albums, this price is too crazy to pass up... $7.76 for all 5: Amazon Some prices that are very close for some other jazz artists. (Look below the Amazon price, and yes there is some postage.) These include some of the Thelonious Monk studio Columbia releases (bonus tracks included), Weather Report, John McLaughlin and a few others in the $8 range. Quote
mikelz777 Posted July 12, 2010 Report Posted July 12, 2010 (edited) It's a nice way to pick up some of George Benson's stuff before he dove head-first into the smooth jazz-pop world. I was amused to see this pop up when I narrowed the Original Album Classics search to just "jazz". No, it's not the Norwegian releases of one of our favorite trombonists. crisp Posted September 1, 2010 Author Report Posted September 1, 2010 Looks like the old Brubeck Time box is to be reissued in this series. Amazon UK's price must be a mistake. Quote
crisp Posted September 16, 2010 Author Report Posted September 16, 2010 There's another batch of five-disc sets coming on October 25, including a few jazz titles: Al Di Meola Miles Davis George Duke Soft Machine Quote
GA Russell Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 I bought every Soft Machine LP as it was released. I'm definitely up for getting these five on CD. Thanks for the heads up! Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 Those Soft Machine albums are wonderful. Though I wonder what they are using for Third. I've been through three versions on CD - the first two were atrocious soundwise, the most recent was acceptable but still not brilliant. But it was a double CD with a live broadcast too. Hope they are using the most recent remastering if they've gone back to a single disc. I'm tempted to ask which mix of the Miles albums is being used. But that would be mischief making. Quote
crisp Posted September 29, 2010 Author Report Posted September 29, 2010 Another new release has come up, a further Brubeck set: details here You know, I think Sony should just do a complete Brubeck mini-LP sleeve set, like the recent one they did for Miles. Surely all of his albums have been digitised at some point somewhere in the world. Quote
crisp Posted December 30, 2010 Author Report Posted December 30, 2010 Two new titles. Duke Ellington with Such Sweet Thunder, The Far East Suite and ...And His Mother Called Him Bill. Nina Simone with Sings the Blues, Emergency Ward and Baltimore. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 Such Sweet Thunder still not corrected, I suppose. Quote
crisp Posted July 2, 2011 Author Report Posted July 2, 2011 Another new jazz title: Thelonious Monk with Misterioso, Monk in Tokyo (both discs), Monk and Thelonious Sphere Monk Quote
paul secor Posted July 2, 2011 Report Posted July 2, 2011 Another new jazz title: Thelonious Monk with Misterioso, Monk in Tokyo (both discs), Monk and Thelonious Sphere Monk Wonder why they included the last one. Would have been a good set without it - or with another album replacing it. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 2, 2011 Report Posted July 2, 2011 I still haven't sorted out Misterioso. Can anyone tell me which tracks, from where are on it. Quote
