bertrand Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 (edited) (If there is already an old thread on this topic, I apologize). Although they will never replace CDs, occasionally iTunes and Amazon (and others?) have some items available for download that will probably never come out on CD or did in the past but are now OOP. With the state of the industry these days, more obscure things are less and less likely to make it to physical CDs. So I thought we could reconcile all these into one thread (similar to the Newbury bargain thread). First up: V.S.O.P. (Five Stars) iTunes/Amazon $3.99 A short studio album recorded by the quintet while they were touring in Japan. I saw this once as part of a 2-CD Japanese import but at a prohibitive price. I'm not sure how this could fit as bonus cuts on a live session, so this will probably never come out on its own. Includes an early version of 'Atlantis' called 'Circe' and an early version of Tony's great tune 'Mutants On The Beach' (from Civilization). Bertrand. Edited May 2, 2010 by bertrand Quote
bertrand Posted May 2, 2010 Author Report Posted May 2, 2010 Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FL0DEQ/ref=sr_1_album_1_rd?ie=UTF8&child=B001FL8712&qid=1272814288&sr=1-1 (I found it by searching for 'Mutants On The Beach'). Not sure how to link to iTunes, but I found it by searching for VSOP. Bertrand. Quote
JSngry Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 Thanks, I downloaded it. FWIW, $27.35 @ CD Japan: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=SICP-10079The LP for $25.00: http://www.audiophileusa.com/item.cfm?record=38046 Quote
marcello Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 I have the LP. Good music and sound, but very short playing time. Quote
Claude Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 This was a direct-to-disc recording, which is limited to about 15 minutes per LP side. Every side has to be recorded in one uninterrupted take. Quote
bertrand Posted May 2, 2010 Author Report Posted May 2, 2010 That explains why tracks 1/2 and 3/4 sort of blend into each other. Bertrand. Quote
JSngry Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 $3.98 sounds like a good download price then, although as Clem used to say (& Moms Mobley might yet say), where the eff are the lossless format downloads? Quote
Eric Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 (edited) I also noted that both iTunes and amazon have this one (the first incarnation of VSOP) - cheaper at amazon, plus you can cherry-pick tracks http://www.amazon.com/V-S-O-P/dp/B001FL2E4S/ref=pd_sim_dmusic_a_3 Edited May 2, 2010 by Eric Quote
Joe Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Both of Dave Burns' Vanguard dates (at least one of which has received a recent vinyl reissue) are available via iTunes... http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/dave-burns/id5683004 Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Although they will never replace CDs More to the point, they will never replace cylinder discs. Quote
Joe Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Also on iTunes only, THE BILLY TAYLOR TRIO INTRODUCES IRA SULLIVAN, originally on ABC-Paramount. Superb. http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-billy-taylor-trio-introduces/id316692246 Quote
JSngry Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Can we get the phase-negation people to do their thing on Billy Taylor? If so, I'd be interested. Quote
Joe Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I think Ira Sullivan just naturally cancels out the good doctor. (Provided he's center-panned.) Quote
JSngry Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Still, that's one I'd be more likely to sample from a blog first... I have a big, huge, in fact, Billy Tayor phobia, I'll admit it. At least as far as his playing. The guy's a great story-teller, though. The 4-part Cadence interview he did was priceless. Quote

You've heard one track from that record already, in BFT 39. Interesting to read your comments to "In a Mellow Tone": TRACK TEN - Sounds like the love child of a menage-a-trois between Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, & Paul Quinichette, and I mean that flatteringly. Some really nice phrasing by the tenorist. Pianist has his/her own bag, but the tenor's the show here for me. Go ahead on with that! Email incoming! Quote
JSngry Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Hey, phobias are meant to be overcome, and I enjoy email, so..yeah! Quote
JSngry Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 I notice that iTunes does not offer the original cover, so here ya' go: Quote
bertrand Posted May 14, 2010 Author Report Posted May 14, 2010 I saw a 3-song EP of Henry Cow - The John Peel sessions on both iTunes and Amazon. Was this part of the massive box set or is this something that was never out on CD? Bertrand. Quote

We must be happy with the crumbs that fall from the Sony table, because that's the adult way to deal with life! Also, this download isn't available in Europe simply because Sony aren't in this business to lose money! They know what's right for us (and them)! Quote

Yeah, this is good stuff, lots of energy, almost (mostly) like an acoustic "fusion" session, although Ron Carter would have been better off being Stanley Clarke (on wood, of course). But even at that, this is some damn good stuff, and at $3.98, hey. Quote
bertrand Posted May 22, 2010 Author Report Posted May 22, 2010 Can't buy a sammich for $3.98. Bertrand. Quote
JSngry Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 Not even haffa one! BTW, I forgot my manners - thanks for the tip. It's probably the best $3.98 I've spent in decades! Quote
