Durium Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 CHARLIE HADEN The career of Charlie Haden seems to have been developed into an upward trend: Art Pepper, Elmo Hope, the legendary Double Quartet of Ornette Coleman and his Quartet West recordings. But few people know that, when the young 18-years old Charlie moved to California with his plywood bass, he had finished a 16 year career as the youngest cowboy singer and yodeller on the air. Charlie Haden revives his roots Durium Quote
JohnT Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Sorry, I had to vote for "other" my two favorites aren't on your list... Scott LaFaro and Sam Jones.... ...although all on your list are favorite players!!!!! Quote
colinmce Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Sorry, no Richard Davis or Paul Chambers on your poll. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Charlie is a great player and a nice guy, but not my "favorite" bassist.I had to vote Other as well. Quote
Free For All Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Can't choose a single favorite. There are so many great ones for different reasons. Quote
king ubu Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 favourites, off the top of my head: Oscar Pettiford Charles Mingus Doug Watkins Paul Chambers Richard Davis young Gary Peacock and yes, Charlie Haden also! weird, a poll about bassists and Ming and Pettiford missing... Quote
Van Basten II Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 William Parker was the first guy that came out of my mind Quote
ep1str0phy Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Jimmy Garrison, Johnny Dyani, Harry Miller, Barry Guy, Ronnie Boykins, seconded on Mingus, Pettiford, Richard Davis, Peacock... Quote
paul secor Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Rorschach test thread. Is it about Charlie Haden? Or is it about - who is/are your favorite bass player(s)? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Rorschach test thread. Is it about Charlie Haden? Or is it about - who is/are your favorite bass player(s)? I was thinking the same thing. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Probably a few old threads available for both choices! Quote
AndrewHill Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 (edited) Yeah, I love Charlie with Ornette (esp Science the Montreal Tapes on Verve, but otherwise I don't really care about Quartet West and his solo efforts as of late. Too many bassists that rank higher overall, but Charlie is near there: Jimmy Garrison Charlie Mingus William Parker Peter Kowald Paul Chambers Juni Booth Henry Grimes Cecil McBee Larry Ridley Richard Davis (especially with Andrew Hill) Gary Peacock (with Ayler and Ellis) Leroy Vinager David Izenzon Ronnie Boykins Scott LaFaro ...just off the top of my head Edited April 27, 2010 by Holy Ghost Quote
DrJ Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 I voted "other." Probably a toss up between Richard Davis and Fred Hopkins. I've always liked George Mraz as well, and Chuck Domanico. Heck there are dozens of great bassists not listed here that would be in the running. I can't view Haden in a very favorable light anymore after I took a day off work and drove to SF expressly to see him with Bobby Hutcherson and George Cables at Yoshi's earlier this year for a disaster of a show. Most of the issues seemed related to Haden. You can read a review of this show here, and it's spot on in my view: My link Quote
king ubu Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Ah yes, Dyani and Miller! Didn't think beyond US when posting yesterday... Quote
paul secor Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 No love for Wilbur Ware or Malachi Favors? I know there is. They just must have slipped people's minds. That happens. Quote
RDK Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 I love Haden, but like so many others I can't come up with a singular "favorite." Probably Mingus, but even then it'd be more for his writing and band-leading. Quote
king ubu Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 No love for Wilbur Ware or Malachi Favors? I know there is. They just must have slipped people's minds. That happens. Yes, of course there is! Hey, I was the only one to mention Doug Watkins, too... if this would be a "who are you're favourite bass players"-thread and not a poll, people would have posted longer lists (I would have, for sure). AmirBagachelles Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Phil Lesh, Oscar Pettiford, John Entwhistle Quote
