clifford_thornton Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 Hey, does anybody know whether the tracks on the Japanese BYG LP Charles Mingus Live with Eric Dolphy (BYG YX-7009) rec. Antibes, 7/13/60 also appeared on the Mingus at Antibes 2LP set? I found a copy of the BYG whilst digging this weekend and put it on hold because I have the Atlantic two-fer (albeit, in storage). Haven't spun that in years & it seemed to me like the track titles were different. I mean, worst thing that could happen would be dumping $15 down the drain, but I'm curious and there must be some Mingus-philes here. The Mingus discography online was unclear (to me). Thanks! Quote

kh1958 Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 There was a bootleg release that pre-dated the official issuance of the concert by Atlantic in 1976 or 1977. The bootleg may be from an inferior sound source. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 5, 2010 Author Report Posted April 5, 2010 Great, thanks for the info - I will rescue my Atlantic and hold onto that. Quote
brownie Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 The BYG release had sound 'borrowed' from the French ORTF archives. The Atlantic had sound of its own (recorded by Barclay Studio). Quote
Spontooneous Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 I've long enjoyed the Atlantic but have wondered about the other versions. Are some of the performances edited in the Atlantic editions? Seems to me I hear some splices (like at the beginning of Curson's solo on April, and a couple of other spots, but I'm not at home to check the disc right now). Do the other versions perhaps have a few more bars? Quote
Pete C Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 While we're on the subject, does anybody know the source of the snippet of film from I'll Remember April--why it's not complete and why nothing else from the show has surfaced? Quote
jazzsoulfunk Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 This is obviously a huge bump but it looks like the full performance of 'I'll Remember April' was uploaded to youtube a couple of months ago. Quote
jazztrain Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Wow! Thanks for posting this. Just made my day! This is obviously a huge bump but it looks like the full performance of 'I'll Remember April' was uploaded to youtube a couple of months ago. Quote
kh1958 Posted February 1, 2014 Report Posted February 1, 2014 Presumably lifted from this DVD (of dubious origins): http://www.amazon.com/Eric-Dolphy-Charles-Mingus-6tet/dp/B0029XEZEI/ref=sr_1_14?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1391298380&sr=1-14&keywords=Charles+Mingus Quote
