Shutout 3 times IN A ROW by the Mets.

How could it get any worse??

From my viewpoint, it was delicious and couldn't have it enjoyed it more. Also don't forget that counting in the game the last game the Mets lost to the Phillies back in Philadelphia, Mets pitchers have shut out the Phillies 31 one innings in a row whistling.gif Also, they only gave up one run the first time they met.

Does anyone outside of you still think the Phils are bound for something special this year?

FYI, the Phils aren't as good and the Mets aren't as bad as you think.

If we're not clear on this, let me bring it home:

TWENTY SEVEN STRAIGHT ZEROES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy the momentary success. The Mets don't have a chance in hell of making the playoffs. And the Phils are two-time defending NL champions. You're awfully mouthy for a fan of a team working on a streak of three straight "disappointing" seasons (and one predictably bad one this year), with the worst GM in the game and a manager more likely to be shit-canned in September than working on his playoff rotation.

You're awfully mouthy for someone who knows nothing about me, and who is a fan of a team that has equally as little chance to make the playoffs this year.

How can a Sox fan even bring up the subject of a string of disappointing seasons without looking and sounding like an ignoramus?

And a good morning to you too. Geez, which side of the bed did you wake up on today ohmy.gif . I've always said that I'd be happy if they had a winning record. The Phils are probably the best team in the NL (although outside of their top two starters, I don't think their starting pitching is that great). You have to enjoy those momentary successes and I don't see what's wrong with that.

I don't know, maybe because we've made the playoffs every year except one since 2002, not to mention winning two World Championships in that time? As opposed to, say, blowing seemingly insurmountable September leads in back-to-back years? You want to cling to 1986? You think that makes the pathetic Mets somehow superior for all-time?

Talk about an ignoramus.

Oh, you want me to try to be a dick?

Where can I start?

Front office:

Steve Phillips, hired and retained even though he had started his career of serial carousing and sexual harassment. Not to mention being one of the worst GMs in the history of the game, a man who couldn't get himself hired by any baseball team anywhere after the Mets finally fired him.

Tony Bernazard - anyone care to remember that world class asshole?

How about the current asshole GM, who had the gall to try to blame the Bernazard mess on a NYDN reporter, and despite having such a huge payroll can't seem to figure out how to make a roster that can do anything but collapse in September - if they get that far? Anyone think he'll ever get another baseball job after the Mets inevitably fire him?

How did that Pedro Martinez signing work out for ya? Red Sox looked at the same medical records and said "no way will he last four years". Mets gave him a four year deal and he lasted a year and a half before breaking down.

And that's a helluva stadium they built - more of a monument to a totally different franchise (the Brooklyn Dodgers) than the actual franchise that calls it home. And they couldn't figure out that "Obstructed View" seats don't really work in the 21st Century? And they can't even maintain interest in their new park - they played to 92.7% of capacity last year, only 79% so far this year.

Can you hear me now?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO. OUCH.

Trust me. You could not even begin to hang with me in a war of words. Why don't we end it here, before the whole board realizes what an idiot you are (if that hasn't happened already). You're making a fool of yourself, and are a little boy playing in a man's world.

Besides, you jumped into a situation that had absolutely nothing to do with you or your team.

Yeah, a war of words is a terrifying thought coming from a Met fan and a Jet man. I don't know if there is anything in the world sadder than that.

Strike that - an arrogant Met fan and Jet man.

Must be something about that NY water.

Dan,

You've got to be kidding me. Jetman and I might be a little pleased that our team is doing well (after a crappy year last year) and you go crazy. What is it with this attitude. Neither of us post that much so I don't think we could have done anything to take this tone.

I thought we used to get along well. Guess not. Too bad.

Posted

Nothing was directed at you, Brad, and I can't imagine why you would think it was. Jetman runs his mouth against a team that has embarrassed the Mets over the past several years and is clearly superior this year, regardless of a three-game fluke, then he runs his mouth against my team, which is a really ballsy thing for a Mets fan to do. In every way - historically, here-and-now, current player development and front office - the Red Sox are the superior franchise, and I'm not going to take shit from a Met fan who thinks otherwise.

So, if you think otherwise, and want to say so, I'll direct some your way. But you didn't, and I haven't. And beyond that, is there anything I said about the Mets that isn't accurate? Do you wish Steve Phillips was still GM? Are you proud of the current GM or the buddy he protected, Bernazard?

You're taking the reasonable approach - enjoy some long awaited good fortune and see what happens. Jetboy thinks the Mets can print playoff tickets.

And let's not forget who went for "ignoramus" and "dick". The guy who is supposedly the master debater.

The Red Sox have won 7 World Championships in the last 106 seasons, which is once every 15 years.

The Mets have won twice in 47 years, once every 24 years.

So despite all of that "futility" they still win more championships more often.

In those 47 seasons of shared existence, the Red Sox have two world championships, five pennants, six division championships and seven Wild Card berths.

14 out of 47 seasons they played in the post-season: Once every 3.4 seasons.

The Mets have two world championships, 4 NL pennants, 4 division championships and two Wild Card playoff entries.

7 out of 47 seasons did the Mets reach the playoffs. HALF as often as the Red Sox.

Thanks for playing.

Again, how did you decide to place yourself in the middle of a Mets-Phillies discussion?

You did it because of your hatred for all things New York, especially the Yankees.

My advice to you is to grow up, and start worrying about things that are important.

Otherwise, you're in for a long and miserable run.

Oh, man...A-Rod just doubled off Indians pitcher David Huff's head. A line drive hit so hard that it caromed off Huff's head all the way into right field. They had to take Huff off the field on a stretcher; he's evidently still conscious, as he raised a hand to acknowledge the crowd, but I really hope he's going to be OK. I was listening on the radio, haven't seen a replay yet, but it sounded pretty bad.

Because Met arrogance is only slightly less acceptable than, I don't know ... Washington Generals arrogance?

You did it because of your hatred for all things New York, especially the Yankees.

The Yankees have nothing to do with it. Except for the brief time between October 2004 and October 2009 there wasn't much I could hold over the Yankees or their fans. The Mets, on the other hand ...

That's funny - because I've genuinely enjoyed the vast majority of this century. You on the other hand are in the midst of a long and miserable run that shows no likelihood of ending.

Ouch. Passing thoughts of Herb Score 53 years ago...

I didn't even think of that, but hopefully such a hit won't have the impact on Huff's career that it had on Score's. My dad had a couple of very nice Herb Score baseball cards from the 1950s, and I always had a twinge of empathy for him whenever I looked at them.

Situations are obviously very different--about the only similarity is that it's an Indian pitcher getting hit by a Yankee batter. No will will confuse Huff with Score, or that Tribe with this one. The mid-50's were the last golden era for the Tribe until the mid/late 90's. [Alas, both eras were Championship-free.]

No, I wasn't trying to equate Huff with Herb Score, just expressing concern that Huff won't suffer a relative decline similar to Score's after he got hit. (Though I realize Score blamed his subsequent decline on a 1958 arm injury.)

Beneath the pro ranks, there's evidently some movement for pitchers to wear protective gear around the head.

EDIT: some posters at Pinstripe Alley are reporting that Huff's CAT scans were negative and that he's not seriously injured.

Not suggesting that you were, just stating the obvious differences. Was going to ask why Joba is in a game that the Yankees have well in hand, but I think (6 Indians runs later) I'll not mention it now...

Now that made me laugh out loud but it sure looks like the Yankee bullpen may be in serious trouble. Aceves may be out for the year with a bulging disc, and Robertson came out of this one with an apparent back injury. They brought Gaudin back and he's clearly not the answer having given up a solo homer today and gotten knocked around in his other appearances.

At minimum the Yankees have to get Joba fixed. If Robertson is out for any length of time, its Katie-bar-the-door time. They'll be relying on the starters to get it to Mo, or else on the bats to bludgeon the opposition.
