Quote
brownie Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Yes! It's also available on a PJ CD with two alternate takes of 'L.A. After Dark'. Teddy Edwards arranged and conducted all the tunes from the three sessions that were on this album. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Why haven't I got this record? (Don't answer that.) MG Quote
David Ayers Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Why, though I had it, did I sell it? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Same here. [slaps forehead] Quote
king ubu Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Mighty fine one! I never understood why a lot of people didn't like it... and Edwards' arrangements are suiting the music just fine, too! Some fun tune choices, too... "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" next to "Baltimore Oriole"! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Great album, lots of fun. I think it only came out on CD in Europe and/or maybe the UK. Don't recall it ever being available stateside. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 It was issued in the US in 1998. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 I thought it was in the West Coast Classics series. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Ah - completely forgot there were Pacific Jazz reissues without the "West Coast Classic" imprint. Quote
brownie Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 My vinyl copy was in so-so condition. I was glad to see this fine album reissued! Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 though I love Booker, I remember not liking this session. But I haven't listened to it for many many years. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 A very rare excursion for Teddy Edwards to NYC. Recorded in Webster Hall, I think. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 1, 2010 Author Report Posted April 1, 2010 dude really, my orig. lp specifically has an (*) next to teddy edwards name on the back cover and denotes only the track 1 on each side as the teddy tracks. no info given on the rest!! this was well into dick bocks major lsd phase (chewy's theory) so who knows..........what what what? its a PJ lp w/ teddy edwards....in NYC??............................ "DISLIKE!!!!" Quote
sidewinder Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Believe it or not I once saw Teddy play live in NYC. It was right at the end of his playing career and he played superbly (John Hicks was on piano). At the 'Jazz Standard' I think. Quote

It was right at the end of his playing career and he played superbly (John Hicks was on piano). At the 'Jazz Standard' I think. Did you see Teddy in the UK? Again, at the end of his playing career. I had the chance to speak to him briefly, a very nice and courteous man. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Did you see Teddy in the UK? Again, at the end of his playing career. I had the chance to speak to him briefly, a very nice and courteous man. Sadly not, John - didn't realise he actually toured the UK back in the 90s. I did get to see him very close up at one of those LA jazz fests back in 1999 when he had his arm in a sling due to an accident/ilness (?) but insisted on leading his band and introducing it on stage (Harold Land played at that fest too, who I did get to briefly meet - again, fabulous). The NYC gig was the one time I did get to hear Teddy on tenor and it was hugely impressive. From what I saw, came across as a very nice guy. I'll put some Teddy Edwards on deck today ! Quote
brownie Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 what what what? its a PJ lp w/ teddy edwards....in NYC??............................ "DISLIKE!!!!" you mean you dislike the great albums he recorded for Prestige (recorded in New York) and for Verve/Gitanes (at least two recorded in New York and Paris)? The Verve 'Tango in Harlem' - with Christian McBride and Billy Higgins - recorded in New York and 'Live in Paris' are among his best records. The 'Live in Paris' was taped at the La Villa club where Edwards played on several occasions. Heard him live there and it was heaven! Quote
king ubu Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 "Tango in Harlem" might be my lonely island Teddy Edwards album! "Live in Paris" is somewhat flawed by all the added production, I find, but still a very strong one! Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 The Verve 'Tango in Harlem' - with Christian McBride and Billy Higgins - recorded in New York and 'Live in Paris' are among his best records. The 'Live in Paris' was taped at the La Villa club where Edwards played on several occasions. Heard him live there and it was heaven! I do enjoy Teddy's "Tango In Harlem". I have never been able to find a copy of "La Villa Live in Paris", but it's been a while since I've looked. Hmmm, there's a couple of inexpensive copies on amazon.com. I might finally be able to hear this. BTW, as big of a Booker Ervin fan as I am, "Booker 'N Brass" rarely gets into the CD player. Don't know exactly why, but it's a bit of a "no big deal" session in my book. Kevin Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 omg yea i DO have this one Teddy on Prestige....i was so torn on buying it.....i was so angry!!!!!!!!! lol its just the west coast jazz in me this type of wcj in nyc lp sets all my bells off!!!!!!!!!! Quote
JamesAHarrod Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Yes! It's also available on a PJ CD with two alternate takes of 'L.A. After Dark'. Teddy Edwards arranged and conducted all the tunes from the three sessions that were on this album. I believe that the asterisk (*) beside the three tunes in the liner note on the LP is tied to the public performance clearance ASCAP BMI (*). Bob Weir's Teddy Edwards Discography also attributes all of the arrangements to Teddy Edwards. A footnote states that Mark Gardner was present at the 13 September 1967 session and reported in Discographical Forum No. 23, March 1971, that up to seven takes were recorded on some tunes, many of them complete. Those tunes were: KANSAS CITY, I LOST MY SUGAR IN SALT LAKE CITY and EAST DALLAS SPECIAL. None of these appear as alternates on the CD reissue. Ervin's earlier session for Pacific Jazz, STRUCTURALLY SOUND (PJ-10119 - ST-20119), was reissued on CD in 2001 on the Blue Note label imprint as part of the Connoisseur CD Series with four previously unissued bonus tracks.
