chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 no i am not misreading the exteremly hard-to-follow Atlantic personel-linernotes: the man himself blows the organ on a few pieces, regular piano on others---but then theres a small chunk of pieces with zero Hank, which, usually, would not be a good thing, less hank. that is not something you usually say you want to do, less hank. however in this special case, its ok cause organ is played by, and im going to quote Atlantic directly now::: Johnny Patton. SOUL GROOVE- Johnny Griffin & Matthew Gee....with Johnny Patton aka Big Johnny Patton. the BJP session date is a few days prior to the date w/ Hank Jones.....what i wish i knew, is if there was some connection other than the names on the record together: did BJP show up to the later session a few days later. i mean, HANKS ON ORGAN. hank doesnt play organ, HANKS ON ORGAN AND KILLIN IT, DID BIG JOHN PATTON HAVE SOME INFLUENCE ON THAT. LIKE I WONDER IF THE ORGAN WAS IN THE STUDIO AND JOHNNY GRIFFIN WAS ALL YEA BJP WAS KILLIN IT LAST WEEK FOR THE ALBUM, AND HANK JONES WAS ALL: OH YEAH, WELL LET ME SEE ABOUT THAT, I DONT REALLY KNOW WHAT HAPPENED, BUT WHATEVER DID, IT LEAD TO HANK ON ORGAN: ::::: IS THIS HANKS SOLO ORGAN-RELATED DATE, EITHER WHICH WAY THIS IS A GREAT CHEWY-RECOMMENED ORGAN DATE YOU MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT HAVE HEARD OF: me myself, I didnt know it existed. now i have a 1st pressing- IT BETTER BE WORTH IT!!! Lololool, no im liking it so far i guess http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/12in2/LPmikamitakeshi%20677.jpg Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 It's not Hank's only recording on organ. He played organ on one track of Kenny Burrell's LP "Freedom" - Blue NoteGXF3059 - the session of 27 March 1963. I've got the feeling I have something else of him on organ, but for the life of me I can't think what it is. MG Quote
Daniel A Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 Nice find, Aric. Hank deploys a somewhat un-funky organ sound on that album, but his solos are nice (although only two on organ from what I can remember). He has played organ on a couple of other sessions through the years, as well as electric harpsichord and a few other oddities. You may find some of these sessions in the AAJ Hank Jones discography here: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/musician_discography.php?id=8166 Quote
