This is my first Jeremy Pelt purchase and his latest release. Quite good. The musicians assembled remind me alot of Miles' 2'nd quintet. That type of vibe. Anyone else own this one?

Chances are Pelt's quintet is in town for a gig on Easter Monday - if the agent can sell enough tickets beforehand, he will take the risk - he's afraid too many regular visitors are out of town for vacation. We'll see ...

I saw the band a couple of weeks ago and the house was pretty well sold out.

The band is fine, especially Jeremy and Danny Grissett, who are wonderful, although Gerald Cleaver is not my kind of drummer.

Tell us what you think if you hear them, Mike.

In my opinion he's adding a lot of his own thing to the jazz pantheon here. He just had the misfortune of being born about 30 years too late. Here's the thing - no matter WHAT he played, he wasn't going to be starting any jazz movements or schools, because jazz as a POPULAR form of music is indeed dead and has been for decades. That doesn't mean it's artistically dead, but it does mean that the likelihood of anyone starting a "jazz revolution" is somewhere between slim and none, there just ain't enough of a critical mass folks.

another :tup for Gerald Cleaver! The guy is a beast. Has been amazing every time I've seen him play.

Proud to say I've known Gerald Cleaver for quite a few years (he's from the D). He has made a strong name in NY avant circles but his dad was a respected bop drummer (Johnny Cleaver) and Gerald played his share of straight-ahead jazz before leaving town.

Two years ago he brought a group to the Detroit Jazz fest that included Pelt on trumpet. It swung, but wasn't a bop band.
