A Lark Ascending Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 Here are some more quotes: “Life is already complete,” he said. “You can’t learn what life is. And the only way you die is if something kills you. So if life and death are already understood, what are we doing?” “Being a human, you’re required to be in unison: upright,” he said. “I think he’s singing pure spiritual,” he said. “He’s making the sound of what he’s experiencing as a human being, turning it into the quality of his voice, and what he’s singing to is what he’s singing about. We hear it as ‘how he’s singing.’ But he’s singing about something. I don’t know what it is, but it’s bad.” “That’s breath music,” he said, as big groups of singers harmonized in straight eighth-note patterns, singing plainly but with character. “They’re changing the sound with their emotions. Not because they’re hearing something.” But then we were off on another topic — whether a singer should seek a voicelike sound for his voice. “Isn’t it amazing that sound causes the idea to sound the way it is, more than the idea?” he asked. “Right now, I’m trying to play the instrument,” he said, “and I’m trying to write, without any restrictions of chord, keys, time, melody and harmony, but to resolve the idea eternally, where every person receives the same quality from it, without relating it to some person.” As you perhaps have guessed, the above quotes are not from Keith, but rather from Ornette (full article here). Are they really so different? One of those smileys with a big grin. Quote
paul secor Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 If it is Clem, welcome back. If Aric became Chewy so Clem can become MomsMobley. If it isn't Clem, well, welcome anyhow. I already like your style. Clem was Clem, Moms is Moms. Whatever the reality, I'm just happy to read things that make me think - always a good thing. Quote
Guy Berger Posted April 7, 2010 Author Report Posted April 7, 2010 While I've read plenty of nonsense from Keith, this seemed fairly innocuous to me - I'm surprised at the strong reactions. Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 I love Jarrett's best records, I truly do. But if he and CH produce real duo sparks, I will be surprised. I don't expect to be 10% as impressed as I was by the DeJohnette & Frisell impromptu disc of a few years ago. That was a fine one from some good old ECM guys. Quote
David Ayers Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 Haden's two LPs of duets with various people (including Jarrett) plus the one with Hampton Hawes and the other with Ornette, were all rather good. It will be a great thing if this new record has even half the life of those, so I say don't write it off... Quote
nail75 Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 While I've read plenty of nonsense from Keith, this seemed fairly innocuous to me - I'm surprised at the strong reactions. Yeah, what is this about? Mental retardation? Temporary insanity? Envy? Something in the water? Quote
mooche Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Hello everyone. Bought it few days ago and it has been in the CDP since. It's simply beautiful. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 I've heard good things from a friend who has a promo copy. I've got an order in. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 I just reviewed the advance of Jasmine for AAJNY, though it won't appear until June. It is a very relaxed, enjoyable CD. Quote
JETman Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 What? Nobody who has heard it wants to provide a transcription of the moans? Quote
RDK Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 What? Nobody who has heard it wants to provide a transcription of the moans? Guess you're one of those "glass is half empty" kind of guys... Quote
Tom Storer Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 Here are some more quotes: [...] As you perhaps have guessed, the above quotes are not from Keith, but rather from Ornette (full article here). Are they really so different? Actually, yes, they are very different. Ornette asks questions and thinks about what it is to be human, Jarrett congratulates himself on how special he is. Contrast this: "So if life and death are already understood, what are we doing?" with this: "Charlie and I are obsessed with beauty. An ecstatic moment in music is worth the lifetime of mastery that goes into it." That said, I loved the fact that this quote of Ornette sounds like he could be talking about Jarrett: "I think he’s singing pure spiritual,” he said. “He’s making the sound of what he’s experiencing as a human being, turning it into the quality of his voice, and what he’s singing to is what he’s singing about. We hear it as ‘how he’s singing.’ But he’s singing about something. I don’t know what it is, but it’s bad." I can't abide Jarrett's Standards Trio or his solo albums, but I'll definitely check out the duos with Haden. Quote
JETman Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 But not a Drama Queen! Most definitely not. "Suck it up and deal with it" is what I say. Quote
