clifford_thornton Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Okay that's cool!!! I was told by Fred at Mosaic that the ETA for these sets is late June. 25 June for the Carter/Bradford and 7 July for the Jamal, I think. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 It's hard to believe that Ahmad is not included in the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz Piano...Martin Williams really had it in for him, I guess..... Quote
Ken Dryden Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 Well, Bill Evans is missing from the Smithsonian box as well, so I don't think it was personal on Williams' part to omit Jamal. Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 10, 2010 Report Posted July 10, 2010 Anybody get the Jamal yet--or notice of its shipping? I won't be able to order mine till the end of the month, but jazzed for any fellow Big O campers who are getting theirs right out of the gate. Quote

Head Man Posted July 12, 2010 Report Posted July 12, 2010 I've just been told by Mosaic that my Carter/Bradford set will not be shipping for another two weeks. I think I read somewhere else that there's been a delay in producing the booklets. Ah well.......it was ever thus! Quote
colinmce Posted July 12, 2010 Report Posted July 12, 2010 There's a Carter/Bradford on ebay right now. I wonder how much someone who can't wait a few more weeks is willing to pay ... Quote
J.A.W. Posted July 12, 2010 Author Report Posted July 12, 2010 There's a Carter/Bradford on ebay right now. I wonder how much someone who can't wait a few more weeks is willing to pay ... And I wonder where the seller got it from... Quote

I guess the booklets must have arrived earlier than expected Quote

Son-of-a-Weizen Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 One minor point of clarification. As with the Pershing, wasn't the actual name of the DC venue Spotlight Lounge rather than 'Club'? tranemonk Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Just got off the phone with HQ... Jamal sets are going out next week.... Quote
jazzbo Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Rolf, every mention of the Spotlight I can find is of "Spotlight Club." Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 I'll be interested to compare the duo session with the cassette of the date I was sent years ago. Quote
tranemonk Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 Just got an email with the shipping information... Hopefully the set will arrive Monday (if not today Quote
jazzbo Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 I got a shipping notice as well, meaning I'll probably have both sets on Wednesday. Takes a long time to get to the heart of Texas. It's hard to believe that the Jamal set is finally ready and rolling! Quote
Daniel A Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 (edited) One minor point of clarification. As with the Pershing, wasn't the actual name of the DC venue Spotlight Lounge rather than 'Club'? Of course I've no idea what the name really was, but several discographies give the name as 'Spotlite Lounge', for instance Peter Losin's Miles Davis Discography: http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/Sessions.aspx?s=581101 EDIT: There seems to have been a club run by Clark Monroe at 52nd street in New York in the 40s called 'Spotlight Club'. Daniel, I'd seen a few 'Lounge' references as well which got me to wondering? Shows up on this Dizzy disc page (see 1946).....as well as the Cannonball page (guess Miles played there a few times in '58). Maybe they changed the name in the 60s? No matter...just curious. http://www.jazzdisco.org/dizzy-gillespie/discography/session-index/ http://www.jazzdisco.org/cannonball-adderley/discography/session-index/ p.s. -- wonder if that Miles material was recorded and released? kh1958 Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 There's a nice interview of Ahmad Jamal on allaboutjazz.com right now. Among other things, he says that Idris Muhammad has retired from music. Quote
Shrdlu Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 The Jamal will be great! I hope all you guys can also hear the "Chamber Music of the New Jazz" album, and the early 50s tracks that were released on the Okeh and Epic labels (labels under the Columbia umbrella). They are fantastic. That material is the stuff that influenced Miles and others. The influence on Miles showed up on (Miles') recordings in 1956, so the Mosaic description applies to these earlier recordings, made before the items in the forthcoming set, and so it is not really accurate. mellowT Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 Anybody get theirs yet? I made a special request for USPS priority shipping in the special instructions block, but it was ignored. It used to be when you chose USPS over UPS, Mosaic would send it priority. Now you get a hybrid of Fed-Ex ground and local USPS at the end. Gone are the days of fast shipping. Sigh. Quote
