blind-blake Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 Been listening to a lot of this stuff on the Cam jazz site and the one that is most eye-opening for me is the bill Dixon. I'd avoided most of his black saint stuff previously, finding what I'd heard just too out there. Loved his stuff on savoy and RCA but the bs stuff just didn't move me. Listening more closely Im getting a different picture - a lot of quiet artistry going on. Anybody else getting a new appreciation for any of the musicians in this series? Quote
alankin Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 I've felt the same way about the Bill DIxon set. It makes me want to seek out more of his recordings. Quote

I gained a new appreciation for eighties era Jimmy Giuffre. I gained greater appreciation for Joe Lovano via the Motian set. Was pleasantly surprised by some of the stuff on the Muhal set, admiration increased. Quote

JohnS Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 My Murray set has just been despached from Amazon UK. Arrived today. The only thing missing is the liner/insert notes. Quote
Head Man Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 My Murray set has just been despached from Amazon UK. Arrived today. The only thing missing is the liner/insert notes. Are you certain there should be any? I'm sure my Henry Threadgill box only included the CDs. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 Yes, I don't think any of the sets included liner notes. (John may be saying that they're needed though not included in any of the sets.) Quote
king ubu Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 Yes, they'd be most nice to have, but alas ... got my Cyrille set today, guess the others will arrive tomorrow or the day after. Quote
colinmce Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 (edited) A significantly less intense investment in more Bill Dixon is the wonderful Tapestries for Small Orchestra on Firehouse 12. More on the Intents & Purposes side of things, rather than the Soul Notes. http://firehouse12records.com/album/tapestries-for-small-orchestra Edited October 29, 2013 by colinmce Quote
JohnS Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 My Murray set has just been despached from Amazon UK. Arrived today. The only thing missing is the liner/insert notes. Exactly right Lon. The reduced lp jackets are unreadable and some of the cds had quite extensive essays. Quote
king ubu Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Got the Farmer and Lake out of the mailbox a few minutes ago - since the lp jackets are just about readable to me, I was happy to see ALL the Farmers come with original back-covers (while Lake is on the other end, there's only one out of seven, and that one has no liners, just a Thulani Davis poem). sidewinder Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 (edited) Maybe Black Saint/Soul Note boxes need to be issued with a gratis magnifying glass.. That was one aspect of the George Russell set that I was less than thrilled about (otherwise the set is great). Edited October 29, 2013 by sidewinder Quote
king ubu Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Trivia: the lady here seems to have done the artwork for "Edge-Ing" (which is actually the trio soonafter known as "Trio 3", plus Charles Eubanks on piano): Quote
king ubu Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Damn, Gaslini fell off the truck (or rather: out of the flimsy amazon package), Bley was still in there, but one corner bruised (outer box only, so I'll just keep it). In light of the Gaslini not being currently in stock and the price having gone up, I really, really hope they're not just giving me a refund, I'd really be mad if they did! Oh how I'd love to have real record stores (but not those we had where this Gaslini box would have cost 100 € at least). Quote

What I found helpful to do is scan the back cover using a high dpi (you can also do this by taking a photo with your cellphone), then viewing the picture on my computer. Quote
Swinger Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 I ordered my copy of Gaslini box at amazon.fr . Thanks to the one who mentioned it. I placed my order two weeks ago and I'm still waiting for it to arrive Quote
jazzbo Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 I've listened to a few of the Gaslini discs so far. Great stuff! You're in for some good listening. Quote
king ubu Posted November 2, 2013 Report Posted November 2, 2013 I'll get a replacement for the lost Gaslini whenever it's available again ... but damn, I've had a whole load of back luck with amazon orders last week, this was the worst. Quote
bogdan101 Posted November 6, 2013 Report Posted November 6, 2013 Listening to the Lake set; wow, there is wonderful stuff in there! All in all, one of the most enjoyable boxes in this series so far for me. Quote
xybert Posted November 6, 2013 Report Posted November 6, 2013 Listening to the Lake set; wow, there is wonderful stuff in there! All in all, one of the most enjoyable boxes in this series so far for me. I haven't purchased any of the latest batch (my CD budget got irresistably diverted to a Stan Getz bender out of the blue... the heart wants what it wants...) but i've been eyeing up the Lake set... previously i only had Heavy Spirits and Expandable Language with Lake as a leader... liked them enough but the recent Trio 3 album with Jason Moran has shed new light on Lake for me and i'm keen to dig deeper... i should really take advantage of the streaming on the Cam Jazz site. bogdan101 Posted December 6, 2013 Report Posted December 6, 2013 Paul Bley arrived today, and with a sticker on the box "bonus disc". The bonus disc is "Not to Be a Star" Keshavan Maslak and Paul Bley. So it's really 10 albums in the box. Anybody else got this? Quote
king ubu Posted December 6, 2013 Report Posted December 6, 2013 Yep, mentioned a couple pages back, shortly before the box came out ... pretty cool that they added it, indeed! Quote
