brownie Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Ornette Coleman will turn 80 next March 9. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas. The Fort-Worth Star-Telegram ran a long article about him. Ornette at 80 Quote
king ubu Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 The old man and the plastic saxophone... may he live forever, his music certainly will! By coincidence I just found "Ornette at 12" yesterday, for a pretty humane price (about 12-13€), of course with a small drillhole, but the vinyl looks flawless! Quote
kh1958 Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 The article inaccurately states he has not performed in Fort Worth since 1983--actually, he played multiple concerts in Fort Worth during 1983-1986. Quote
ATR Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 Now let's get this straight. Ornette's birthday is March 9, and it's February 27 today. And his 80th birthday is next March 9? That makes him 78 years old plus 50 weeks and a couple of days. I don't need a reason to listen to Ornette today, he's great every day. He's younger than Cecil Taylor and much younger than Elliott Carter. Happy not quite 79th birthday, Ornette. Quote

king ubu Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Happy Birthday, Ornette! Will play some of his music later! Quote
B. Goren. Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Happy Birthday, Ornette! Will play some of his music later! Yes! Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 (edited) As Ornette is now about 80 (or whatever he really is) do we now call his music "derrière garde"? Whatever, I still don't like his alto playing. I only like his trumpet playing on the session with Jackie Mac (which Miles hated, according to the interview with Chris). paul secor Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Happy Birthday to a Master!!! There are a lot of folks here who love you, Ornette! Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Ornette is a nice man. For that alone I would wish him a happy birthday! Quote

(By the way, I did buy all the Atlantic LPs, and made myself sit through them all.) Quote
AndrewHill Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 Happy Birthday to one of my all-time favorite artists! Almost not a day goes by where I don't think about all the great music he's given us. Quote
edski Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 Happy Birthday Ornette! Does anyone think we will ever see re-releases on his post-Atlantic material? Artists House, Prime Time, etc.? It is a shame that most of that stuff is not readily available. I could envision a few box sets.... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 Ornette owns most of that stuff. Quote
Enterprise Server Posted March 10, 2010 Report Posted March 10, 2010 (edited) I've been listening to WKCR-FM's 88.9 NYC 24 hour broadcast of his music since 0300 PST! Loved it...!!!! Edited March 10, 2010 by Enterprise Server Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 That's one of the hippest album covers ever. Quote
ATR Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 All apologies. To me 'next' March meant a year from now. Happy birthday. Just spent a week listening to his music. OTOH, isn't any day a good day to listen to Ornette's music? Quote
paul secor Posted March 9, 2012 Report Posted March 9, 2012 A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ORNETTE COLEMAN! Quote
colinmce Posted March 9, 2012 Report Posted March 9, 2012 It's not for nothing we named our son August Ornette! (who, consequently, shares his first birthday with Mr. Cecil Taylor next week!) :tup Quote
