cymbalgroove Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Just got word that bassist Jamil Nasser passed away.. RIP Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 man, another loss. Great stuff on those Trane/Garland Prestige sides. RIP Quote
Stefan Wood Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 I know his son, a trumpet player. I'm very sorry to hear the news. Quote
brownie Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Sad to hear about this. Enjoyed him when he was still George Joyner and contributed mightily to albums by Phineas Newborn, the Red Garland quintet sessions with Coltrane and Donald Byrd, Randy Weston. He was also on board for Lester Young's final official session. Quote
JohnS Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 More sad news. Thanks for the music. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 He was also there, with Red Garland, when Lou Donaldson went back to playing straight ahead jazz in 1980. RIP MG Quote
Denis Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Another terrible loss. I heard him with Al Haig in the 70's in New York. RIP Denis Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 (edited) this is very upsetting. I got to know him well when he played with Al Haig all those years. Full of interesting and funny stories, particularly about Blakey. He was a very good and loyal friend to both Al and Joanne. Edited February 20, 2010 by AllenLowe Quote
Chas Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Apart from co-billing on one of Haig's Spotlite LPs , this was the only time he headlined : This is an Italian 7-inch recorded in Turin in 1961 with Jacques Pelzer . Don't know whether the the three tracks on here are available anywhere . Quote
Michael Weiss Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 (edited) I performed with Jamil a fair amount in the 1980s and 90s. In trios with Al Harewood or Vernel Fournier, and in the quartets of George Coleman and Lou Donaldson. I never played with a bass player before or since who's harmonic path on any given tune was played as forcefully as Jamil. Jamil also has a son Zaid who plays alto. AllenLowe Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Jamil was one of the those jazz guys who seemed to have been in a lot of the right places at the right times. Let us not forget his work with Phineas Newborn. Quote
bertrand Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Jamil Nasser has a second son who is a trumpet player and lives in the D.C. area. I've met him a couple of times, but Stafan knows him much better than I do. I'm not sure about the spelling - Mounir? Bertrand. Quote
