How do people end up with these partial sets in the first place? I see people on Ebay selling them all the time, like LPs 4-10 of the Miles/Trane box, etc.

Mosaic will sell the most complete partial set they have right after one goes OOP. Some people, I guess, make a habit of buying these, probably because they get discounted (?) off the standard per CD/LP price.

The CDs from these partial sets are full price, they don't get discounted.

Hans is right. Mosaic sells individual CDs for the same retail price ($17) as if bundled with the box and booklet (e.g., 7 CDs x $17 = $119/set). However, I've seen enough eBay sellers who regularly sell individual CDs or partial sets for far lower than retail, I figure Mosaic is handing out discounts to some people.

As far as I know they don't. These could be CDs that were part of sets that fell off the back of a truck back when they were still available. Mosaic has always had problems with stolen "no box, no booklet" sets that were and still are being offered on eBay for less than the list prices.

Well, I'm guilty of creating one partial Capitol set, too... one of the disc had something that looked like a tiny little bit of air on the surface and one track was unplayable, so they sent me a replacement disc. I assume that's another reason for these partial sets coming into existence.

I've seen partial Mosaic sets in any number of stores for years. It's what first exposed me and got me hooked on Mosaic in the first place - maybe ten years ago now. I expect they're "overprints" or promo copies and stuff. There are always extras pressed; how they get out the "back door" I don't know.

I've occasionally run into partial sets at flea markets and even used CD stores. I was able to get 3 discs of the Mildred Bailey set that way. The person selling said he was helping a family sell a deceased member's CD collection and didn't realize until it was too late that the sets were typically sold together, along with not knowing there were big boxes w/ booklets as well. I suppose even in this age of eBay if one saw the black & white case art without the box & booklet, a person might get the impression it's all rather plain and therefore not very valuable.
