jazzhound Posted December 4, 2003 Report Posted December 4, 2003 Can anyone comment on this pressing? Need to get this title! Quote
wolff Posted December 4, 2003 Report Posted December 4, 2003 I 've had it for quite some time. I think they did a very good job! There are one or two edits/splices that are noticable, but they are on the tapes. Very clean, detailed and dynamic pressing. Great jazz as I'm sure you know. Quote
paul secor Posted December 6, 2003 Report Posted December 6, 2003 I would cop the RCA double CD (a lot of extra material, decent sound) if you don't already have it. If you find that you love the music, get the Classic LP, which sounds great. Quote
David Williams Posted December 7, 2003 Report Posted December 7, 2003 Before you spend the ackers on the Classic LP I'd make sure you like the music, because, much as I love Mingus , Mingus forgive me, I can't get into this. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 7, 2003 Report Posted December 7, 2003 I've had it on lp (twice - bought a 2nd copy after too much wear), 1st, 2nd and 3rd cd editions. Probably my favorite Mingus since it was first issued. The current cd package is worth it for the extra material. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 7, 2003 Report Posted December 7, 2003 I agree, though I know jazzhound won't buy no steenkin' cd. The new version has great sound as well. Really nice cd sound! Quote
David Williams Posted December 7, 2003 Report Posted December 7, 2003 Also, if you go for the Classic, you'll only have the edited version of the album. Quote
David Williams Posted December 7, 2003 Report Posted December 7, 2003 much as I love Mingus , Mingus forgive me, I can't get into this. Possibly I'm just a stupid ass-donkey moron who no like jazz!!!" Quote
jazzbo Posted December 7, 2003 Report Posted December 7, 2003 David, now who would say that? Certainly not I! Quote
kh1958 Posted December 7, 2003 Report Posted December 7, 2003 This is one of my favorites and any version is worth having. I especially like the latest 2CD version, with all the alternate takes and some incomplete takes. Any additional playing by the great Gene Shaw is extremely valuable. My favorite track is Los Mariachis. Quote
hockman Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Can't agree on the latest 2 cd version of this album. The extra materials are unedited takes and broken down takes, and I'm sure Mingus never meant for them to be issued in this way. I'm sure they are useful for those who take an academic interest in jazz, but I much prefer the original version. Don't know about the sonics of the Classic version, but if their other reissues are any indication, it should be good. The newer 2cd version actually sounds worse than the late 80s cd reissue. jazzhound Posted December 9, 2003 Author Report Posted December 9, 2003 Is the original stereo pressing on RCA good? decision time! Quote

However, I like the alternate takes of Los Mariachis and Ysabel's Table Dance almost as much as the originals. I also really like the alternative take of Scenes in the City. And since Gene Shaw is one of my favorite trumpeters of all and there is so little on record, any additional material is valuable. Nothing academic about it. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 I like having it all for listening pleasure, not academic reasons, and I disagree aobut the sound; I think the new RCA double cd beats the original cd and the Classics gold cd to my ears on my system. Quote
