Just heard about this. I got to know Jake through my connection w/Woody's band and had the opportunity to play with him on several occasions.

A great swinging drummer and a very funny and kind man. I love the 60s Herd mostly because of Jake Hanna's playing.

Another great one leaves us. RIP.

He did nice work on Warne Marsh's "All Music"...

I was there, wrote the liner notes, but never asked -- those wonderful three-way rhythm section improvs on the album are unlike anything I've heard before or since, with Hanna, Lou Levy, and Fred Atwood seemingly reading each other's minds. Where the heck did that come from? Was it something (though this seems unlikely) they'd been doing in Supersax? Did it just happen in the studio? Was it Warne's idea? In any case, what Jake plays there is just great; can't imagine many other drummers doing that.

Jake w/Woody

Bill Holman's great chart on After You've Gone. Soloists are Billy Hunt and Sal Nistico.

And Jake swinging like a MF. Holy crap, what a Herd that was!

I see that "After You've Gone" is on the Herman Jazz Icons DVD. Also, do you know who the bass player is?

I saw that band in Montreal in the '60s. Didn't know much about Herman then but enjoyed the band a lot. Probably one of the last great big bands.
