Free For All Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Just heard about this. I got to know Jake through my connection w/Woody's band and had the opportunity to play with him on several occasions. A great swinging drummer and a very funny and kind man. I love the 60s Herd mostly because of Jake Hanna's playing. Another great one leaves us. RIP. Quote
mjzee Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 He did nice work on Warne Marsh's "All Music," and on much of the material released on Concord. RIP. Quote
John Tapscott Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Oh dang! We just lost Ed Thigpen and now another drummer who qualified for the title "Mr. Taste". I loved Jake's Hanna's playing. One of my all-time favorite drummers, not just with Woody but with small groups too. RIP Jake Hanna! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 Sorry to hear this. He was a terrific musician and very nice (and funny) guy. Quote
ValerieB Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 so sorry to hear this! what a loss of a terrific drummer and very nice, funny man. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 He did a great Stan Laurel! Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 He did nice work on Warne Marsh's "All Music"... I was there, wrote the liner notes, but never asked -- those wonderful three-way rhythm section improvs on the album are unlike anything I've heard before or since, with Hanna, Lou Levy, and Fred Atwood seemingly reading each other's minds. Where the heck did that come from? Was it something (though this seems unlikely) they'd been doing in Supersax? Did it just happen in the studio? Was it Warne's idea? In any case, what Jake plays there is just great; can't imagine many other drummers doing that. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 Warne asked Jake if he wanted a solo an Jake said "I can say it all in 4 or 8 bars". Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 Warne asked Jake if he wanted a solo an Jake said "I can say it all in 4 or 8 bars". But what led Lou and Fred to weigh in so boldly alongside Jake? Those passages are just a joy. Quote
Free For All Posted February 14, 2010 Author Report Posted February 14, 2010 Jake w/Woody Bill Holman's great chart on After You've Gone. Soloists are Billy Hunt and Sal Nistico. And Jake swinging like a MF. Holy crap, what a Herd that was! Quote

Holy crap, what a Herd that was! I see that "After You've Gone" is on the Herman Jazz Icons DVD. Also, do you know who the bass player is? Quote
brownie Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 A discreet but highly efficient drummer. Listened recently to Al Cohn's 'Nonpareil' date for Concord and marveled at his accompaniment on that session. Quote
Free For All Posted February 14, 2010 Author Report Posted February 14, 2010 Also, do you know who the bass player is? I'm guessing based on the date, but I'd say Chuck Andrus. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 Sad news, RIP - always liked his work with Herman ands Supersax. Quote
JSngry Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 Don't forget his work w/Maynard! Quote

Holy crap, what a Herd that was! I saw that band in Montreal in the '60s. Didn't know much about Herman then but enjoyed the band a lot. Probably one of the last great big bands. Quote
