Was that with James Reese Europe's Society Orchestra?

There was a site (www.redhotjazz.com) that had RealAudio samples of some of that stuff (as well as Europe's Hellfighter's Orchestra, whose output has of course been released in toto, unlike that of the Society Orchestra). Pretty interesting stuff, all of it. Unfortunately, the site does not seem to be available right now, although it was as recently as last week. Hopefully that's just a temporary condition.

What kind of a career did Lent have post-Europe (again, if this is the guy I'm thinking of)? Jazz? Shows? Dance orchestras? Nothing? If this is the guy I'm thinking of, he displayed pretty damn good chops, at least for the time (then again, chops is chops no matter the era, right?).

Ok, my bad. The drummer w/Europe's Society Orchestra of whom I'm thinking was Buddy Gilmore. What kind of career did HE have post-Europe?

(and I'm googling as we speak in an attempt at self-help, but I prefer "personal" interaction if possible...)

I guess we have different sources Jim. Mine was Chilton's Who's Who. yours was the notes on the cd? I wonder which was right. Whoever it was - there's a story of a drummer doing a record date with Jelly Roll Morton and Jelly giving the guy a hard time. The guy pulled a pistol out and announced he was the guy who iced Jim Europe. For once Jelly was quiet for the rest of the date.

Harold - Europe's miltary band had different personnel, so we're talking two different people here. Buddy Gilmore wasn't in the Hellfighers, not that I can gather.

Patricia - I have read that Reese busted Wright for "unprofessionalism", and that Wright confronted Europe in a dressing room about this and the matter of percieved favortism towards the Hellfighter's other drummer (coincidentally named Steven Wright, but no relation). When Europe ordered Wright to leave, Wright stabbed him in the neck with a pen knife.

According to the late Harrison Smith:

So I was trying to set up this band for Jelly, and one of the boys in the band, the drummer, was pushing everybody around. He was a cut-up, you know, Jelly grabbed him and said, "You think you're togh, don't you? Who'd you ever kill?" The guy said, "Jim Europe." And he really was the guy who had killed band leader Jim Europe in his dressing room in Boston in 1919! Jelly said, "My, my, my!" And to me he said, "I don't want to be around that guy." Herbert Wright, I believe his name was, and I didn't want any part of him either.

BTW Harrison Smith was quite a character. He claimed to own the name "Eugene Sedric" and threatened to sue me for using it on an album. It was a Dick Wellstood session I produced, and Gene was one of the musicians!

The name is Berenice Abbott. A great photographer who specialised in views of New York, may of them have become classics. She also was in Paris in the '20s. She studied there with Man Ray and sculptor Emile Bourdelle.

Webster Young, Jazz Trumpeter, Dies at 71

[P] ORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 19 (AP) — Webster Young, a jazz trumpeter who

played with stars like Miles Davis and John Coltrane in the 1950's, died

last Saturday. He was 71.

The cause was a brain tumor, his son Dorian said.

Mr. Young had expert tutelage at 10, studying with Louis Armstrong. As a

teenager, he jammed with Dizzy Gillespie, earning the nickname Little

Diz in Washington-area clubs.

He broke into the modern jazz scene in New York City in the late 1950's,

recording several albums. He returned to Washington in the 70's, toured

Europe in the 80's and performed regularly at jazz clubs until eight

months before his death.

Mr. Young's career peaked in 1957, when he played coronet with Coltrane

for the album "Interplay for Two Trumpets and Two Tenors."

In addition to his son, of Portland, he is survived by his wife,

Gretchen, and two children from his first marriage, John Wardell Young,

of Washington, and Terry Ann Powell, of Silver Spring, Md.

• Harrison Smith was an old-time hustler who dressed impeccably, although he had somewhat of a retro look. He was not easily dismissed, and he seemed forever to be in pursuit of easy money. When he threatened to sue me for using Sam Wooding's name, Sam laughed and volunteered to be my star witness!
  
  Harrison did, however have some success, as when he told RCA that their Jelly Roll Morton recordings belonged to him (or some of them, at least). His attorney for that case was Flo Kennedy, another hustler, but an often lovable, long-time friend of mine. She handled the Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker estates, and could be quite intimidating--it worked on the RCA people, but I'm not so sure that she and Harrison had a valid case.

Way back in the 50's I caught the Kid Ory band a few times around L.A. Besides Garland, he had a fine N.O. clarinet player, Joe Darensbourg, a Satch type cornetist Teddy Buckner, and a strong young pianist, Lloyd Glenn. I even have their autographs on a 78 album.

OK, OK, OK.......I'LL COME CLEAN ON MY SOBRIQUET.;

I was on Maynard Ferguson's Band and we called for a *FILE STOP* (Missile knows what that is)..but for the record...the bus pulls off to the side of the road and the band *FILES OUT* and pisses.

One night we pulled off to the side of the road and I was pissing over a bridge. Next to me was the piano player, Alan Zavod. He had the balls to say, "That water is cold", to which I replied "IT'S DEEP TOO" !!!!
