clinthopson Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 It's taken me 1/2 hour to catch up on this Ullysesian thread. Even if you do prefer DEEP, you'll always be LDB to me. Didn't you say you worked for Anita O"Day for while? That has to be good for some tales. My son is producing a disc with the Ancient Anita and young studs, Seamus Blake, James Zoller and Warren Smith. He's out here this week and I'll be quizzing him about Ms. O'Days demeanor.
randissimo Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 Here's one you guys up in Michigan may find of interest. I was hired by a singer to do a gig at Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit during May of 1979. I had been working with this singer off and on during that year. I drove to Detroit in my own car but due to traffic and the 10 hour drive I arrived in town later than I had expected. Rather than head downtown where the rest of the band was staying I went directly to Baker's and set up my cans. I asked Baker where there was a cheap motel in the area. He directed me to one and I checked in. I went to the gig that night and Claude Black was on piano, Richie Cole on alto, and a local bass player whose name escapes me. (Ralph Armstrong was hired to begin on the second night). I talked to the singer and he gave me a bunch of upcoming dates i.e. Newport Festival in NYC, Village Vanguard, Wilmington, Delaware etc. Drummer Roy Brooks was in attendence that night and mistook me for Chick Corea at the bar (I looked a lot like him back then). At the end of the evening we were all in the vestibule and had I been staying downtown I would have been in charge of giving the singer a ride back to the hotel, but since I wasn't I said goodnight and walked out of the club with my cymbal bag and headed for my car. As I walked out of the club I saw this big Lincoln Continental parked out front with a couple questionable characters sittting in it. I didn't think too much about it so I just got in my short and cut out. My motel was just around the corner and down the road about a half mile. When I awoke the next morning I was getting ready to take a walk and was feelin' really good about the gig and the upcoming events. I turned on the TV and on the local news the reporter was announcing the fatal shooting of a singer at Baker's Keyboard Lounge the preceding night. "Last night at Baker's Keyboard Lounge jazz singer EDDIE JEFFERSON was fatally shot to death by a man with a shotgun in a Lincoln Continental" I talked to Eddie's chick, Cheryl, and she told me I missed it by mere seconds. That one was close as I'd have probably been taking Eddie to my car had I not arrived in town late and checked into a different motel. I went to the club immediately to get my cans and there were shotgun (birdshot) holes all over the front of the club. The newpaper media was there and they interviewed me. My father immediately called the motel where I was staying and at the moment he was talking to the desk clerk I was being interviewed on TV and the desk clerk told this to my father. Needless to say he was gettin' nervous. I got my cans (and *MY* CAN) out of town and drove 10 hours back to New York. That was one long ride with nothing on my mind for 10 hours except the death of EDDIE JEFFERSON. DEEP Wow! You were the drummer on that gig! I know Claude Black very well and remember when that happened. Around that time I had just picked up an Eddie Jefferson side with a really hip version of "Freedom Jazz Dance" on it and was going to come down that week to Bakers..

CLIT, Yes I worked with COLTON. I recorded a CD with her entiled "LIVE AT VINE STREET" in L. A. with Pete Jolly, Bob Maize, Gordon Brisker etc. It's on Disques Swing. (D.S.G.) Oh yeah, I got some stories re COLTON. I went to Japan twice with her and also Europe. If your son thinks he's gonna get much out of Colton now, I recommend he save his digit. I loved Colton but she's a tough cookie. She told me that she hadn't been laid since 1952. That might explain some of her problems. DEEP

I've got an "Anita O'Day at Baker's Keyboard Lounge" story for ya In the early 80's she was in Detroit at Baker's for week. My mother being a big fan of Anita's, I thought I'd ask her for an autograph. So I went to the bar and got a napkin and an ink pen and walked over to her... She looked at the napkin and then at me and said, " MAN, I AIN'T AUTOGRAPHIN' NO MUTHAFUCKIN' NAPKIN!,,,GO GET A RESPECTABLE PIECE OF PAPER! "..
clinthopson Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 He says that they've got a number of tunes in the can. Maybe he's inherited his dad's suavity and charm and can handle the most obstrporous old broads.

Maybe he's inherited his dad's suavity and charm and can handle the most obstrporous old broads. COLTON is a tough customer. He's gonna have to do some serious "protooling" of those takes. She was one of the greatest Jazz Singers of all time but her pitch has really taken a left. Randall, Yeah, Colton doesn't spare the horses with the expletives. I tell you some stories when I have time. DEEP

randissimo Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 Deep, I posted this one a couple of weeks ago in Drumnmers Corner.. Do you know this club in Munich? According to pianist Johnny O'Neal, Art Blakey had some stories about this place too.. I played a jazz club back in October, '76 in Munich, Germany called the Jazz Domicile. The club owner (Arnst was his name) got really tanked up and came up onstage to sing some or some such nonsense, tripped over the mic cord and fell backwards, trashing the face and bridge on a half size Czech bass, and took down almost my whole drumkit! It was the ugliest sounds I've ever heard!! Arnst was profusely apologetic after it happened and offered to pay for our rooms and any damaged incurred... The next day he didn't remember any of the night before and flatly refused to pay for anything! The bass player took the matter into some kind of International Court and I don't think he ever got re-imbursed for the extensive repairs he had to have done....
Brad Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 Looks like I owe Deep an apology for suggesting that we ignore him. Like Dan, I'm glad he's here. . Deep, do you have any good stories about Sonny Stitt?
Guest DEEP (GET ME OUT OF MY SKULL) Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 DEEP(one), you there? What in hell do you want, CATESTA(pated)?? Please allow me to suggest EPSOM SALTS AS A PURGATIVE!! DEEP
catesta Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 Please allow me to suggest EPSOM SALTS AS A PURGATIVE!! No need for it at this time, but thanks for the suggestion.
Jim Alfredson Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 That is one hell of a story, Deep. Thank you for sharing. What a shame about Eddie. Did you get to play with any organists around D-town in the 70s? I know both Don Patterson and Larry Young were living in Detroit then.
chris Posted December 8, 2003 Report Posted December 8, 2003 Who are you in "real life" anyway, Deep?

Jim Alfredson Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Rusty sold the joint about a year ago to some guy that took it over and then had a heart attack and died. His widow continued to try and run it and had her 15 year old daughter booking bands. Needless to say, it's a shell of what it once was and they don't do jazz anymore. It's a real shame.
JSngry Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 His widow...had her 15 year old daughter booking bands. Why the fuck do we even bother?

connoisseur series500 Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 CONN (A LINGUIST), Is Rusty's Cafe still happenin'? I used to play there too. How 'bout Candy Johnson?...heard he "MOVED TO VERMONT". DEEP Jim has pretty much given the story. There was an article in the Toledo newspaper about Rusty's recently. Rusty Monroe now acts as a greeter at Murphy's, which has its own club band. She sold Rusty's to somebody who in turn was forced to sell it to someone else owing to financial hardship. The new owners turned it into a sports bar and Rusty Monroe has filed a lawsuit against the establishment using the venerable name of "Rusty's" for their sports bar. Typical Midwestern crap. People wouldn't know what jazz is if you directed a trumpet blast into their ear. Rusty is something like 85 years old. It's sad....
Jim Alfredson Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Oh yeah, I forgot the sports bar thing. You know, we need more places with TVs in every nook and cranny. Rusty's was one of the oldest jazz clubs in the country, too. Very very sad.
