Tom 1960 Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 While attending the Fred Hersch show last night, I ran into my neighbors from down the street who I never had any idea were jazz fans. In our conversations they recommended I attend the Marcus Strickland show in April. They seemed to be pretty positive on him. I have to admit I really know nothing of the guy, although I'm definitely curious. What do you guys think? He's performing in a trio which should be interesting. Quote
Niko Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 Smalls Archive has some of his shows: http://www.smallsjazzclub.com/index.cfm?itemcategory=30817&personDetailId=65 Quote
kh1958 Posted February 7, 2010 Report Posted February 7, 2010 I've seen him a couple of times--with Tom Harrell at the Village Vanguard, he was the weakest and least original member of the band. And with Horaace Arnold, who actually expressed some displeasure with the saxophonists level of development. So unless he's improved alot over the last two or three years, a group under his leadership might prove to be a dull concert. Quote
relyles Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 I have enjoyed what I have heard from him this far - in particular his playing with Roy Haynes. He is not breaking any new ground and still has not found a definately distinctive voice, but he is a solid player who is still developing. Quote
sonnymax Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 I dislike his playing very much. I knew I'd find you here! Quote

relyles Posted February 8, 2010 Report Posted February 8, 2010 You are too clever for me. Besides - even I know the difference between alto (Shaw) and tenor (Strickland) Quote

CJ Shearn Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 I enjoy Strickland with Tain, although his solo after Kenny Garrett on "Mr. JJ" from "Detained" seems a bit anticlimactic. Quote
tranemonk Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 his double-CD Twi-Life is very good... Quote
marcello Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 I dig Marcus. He develops and advances every day. I actually don't like Kenny Garretts tendency to milk his solos for audience response. Marcus is a thinker. Quote
