David Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 I searched a while and couldn't find anything on this box. I know it is a repackaging of individual Storyville releases, but is it worth it if one does not own any of the Storyville releases already? I am interested in acquiring the Fargo material, and this seems to be the best (if only current way) to do so. How is the rest of the set in terms of sound quality and performances? Thanks! Quote
jazzbo Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Very much worth it musically in my opinion. And the sound is good to very good on these discs. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Quote
J.A.W. Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 This set contains some very good music. Recommended. Quote
Pete B Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 I have it all in the original issues. Yes, it's worth it. Quote
David Posted February 5, 2010 Author Report Posted February 5, 2010 Thanks for the advice! I'm primarily interested in the Fargo material, but everything else will be an added bonus. Quote
mmcgerr Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 This issue of the Duke Ellington Music Society Bulletin gives a helpful description of the contents of the box: http://www.depanorama.net/dems/071c.htm Quote
king ubu Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 I don't know why a search doesn't bring up the right pages (didn't work for me either, but a google domain-search did). Here's an earlier thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=32097 And here's the Ellington corner, where I tried to link several useful threads about Ellington, including the one about the Duke Box: Addition: if you want the Fargo, I'd get the longbox 2CD version, which has an amazing and detailled booklet! Even though I got the Duke Box (which has one page of notes per disc), I kept the Fargo set because of all the documentation! Quote
Big Wheel Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Listened to a bit of disc 7 today...did anyone else catch Jimmy Hamilton quote Monk's 52nd St. Theme around 1:15 on C Jam Blues? Interesting to hear an Ellingtonian listening to bop as early as 1945. Quote
