Also "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" and "Smash Hits" will be reissued. The "Valleys of Neptune" should be COOL. Link includes track information. Quote
mjzee Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 I wonder when they'll release the Jim Morrison/Johnny Winter jam. Quote
Shawn Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 ROCKIN! I was wondering when they'd get around to another "official" release. Looking forward to hearing this music properly sequenced and mastered. Eddie is the guy for the job. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 Are these new Legacy Editions going to sound better than the previous ones? Didn't they remaster these albums just a few years ago? Quote
jazzbo Posted January 12, 2010 Author Report Posted January 12, 2010 I'm not fond of the Morrison and Winter thing. Yeah, tey remastered those some years back. It's not known or told yet whether these are going to be. Quote
mjzee Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 I'm not fond of the Morrison and Winter thing. I'm not either. Morrison is obviously drunk. Quote
BFrank Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 There was a piece on NPR today, too. Jimi Hendrix's 1969 Album Set For Release I thought the remasters that came out earlier this decade were the "definitive" remasters. Other than the DVD stuff, how are they going to be any different? The "new" album is VERY exciting, though. Quote
7/4 Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 That's great news, I didn't think there was any unreleased studio recordings left. . Quote
jazzbo Posted January 12, 2010 Author Report Posted January 12, 2010 (edited) Depending on how you want to define a "completed item," there are literally a dozen cds worth they could release, and then they could decide what to do with the rest. Lots of stuff, though some of it would be for collectors only, such as a whole cd of complete takes of an evolving arrangement of "I'm A Man," etc. There is rumor that there will be another box set with different content later this year. Other than the DVD stuff, how are they going to be any different? The "new" album is VERY exciting, though. Those earlier ones were "definitive," for the Experience Hendrix then under Universal. Now there's a new deal and they'll want to get money from the core catalog for the new partner. No one is definitively saying that they will be any different. There's a lot of hope from the Hoffman community that they be remastered by someone else, with no compression, limiting, etc. I think this unlikely to happen, and I'm happy if Kramer remains the engineer, especially for the mixing and Marino does the mastering. If they were to be a little less loud, wouldn't hurt. We'll see. Edited January 12, 2010 by jazzbo Quote
king ubu Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 Thanks for spreading the news, I'll be looking for that new release! I saw some kind of 2CD (DVD?) package of "Electric Ladyland" from MCA recently, what was that, also some kind of making of thing? I think it was a CD plus a DVD, but I can't remember. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 12, 2010 Author Report Posted January 12, 2010 That's what it was, a combo pack of the cd and dvd that are also availabl separately. The DVD is a making of feature, related to a series about classic rock albums and their creation. The dvd in this new one is supposedly "new." Quote
bluesbro Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 This new release is a must for any Hendrix fan. But I think I will pass on the 'remastered' core catalogue. Im OK with my EH discs. Quote

Weird and getting weirder... anyway, I'm not compelled to buy anything (besides whatever new official/legit release may turn up). Quote
jazzbo Posted January 12, 2010 Author Report Posted January 12, 2010 I don't think it's weirder and weirder, but rather what I expect more and more. They have to offer something to tempt people to rebuy. And a second disc being a dvd is a successful format with pop and rock releases. Especially if (as in this case) they don't inflate the cost of the release much at all. This is not being marketed to moldy old jazz lovers. Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 12, 2010 Report Posted January 12, 2010 I hated the sound on the Experience Hendrix remasters of Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland and I really hope Sony will remaster those albums without any limiting, added compression and boosted highs. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 12, 2010 Author Report Posted January 12, 2010 It will be interesting to see what they do. I suspect many won't buy any new editions unless they do. Quote
BFrank Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 The only remasters I have are in the MCA box with the alternate covers, stamps(!), etc., and produced by Alan Douglas. Maybe I'll think about getting them again this year. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 13, 2010 Author Report Posted January 13, 2010 Oh man I hated those. I prefer the EH ones to those, I think that they're not bad. What do I know! I think you're a good candidate for these new ones. Quote

Noj Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Hehehe, I bought that old MCA box but I already had that lame compilation The Ultimate Experience. So I returned the packaged one to the store, and the manager gave me some grief before caving and giving me store credit for the unopened disc. Quote
skeith Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Was there discussion by posters who bought this disc? I just picked it up and some of it is very good, other parts I don't like. Is it superior to First Rays of the New Rising SUn? that's "Cry of Love" for those who had the old lps, right? as a kid that one disappointed me because I thought the first 3 studio albums to be masterpieces!! Quote
skeith Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Doesn't anyone want to talk about Valleys? THis may be the best officially released version of "Red House" ever! Noel Redding's backing vocals on "Fire" is about as pleasant as fingernails on a blackboard. Quote
WorldB3 Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Doesn't anyone want to talk about Valleys? THis may be the best officially released version of "Red House" ever! Noel Redding's backing vocals on "Fire" is about as pleasant as fingernails on a blackboard. Red House and Hear My Train A Comin are both killer. Jimi has been way overplayed so I haven't spent much time with it (I still go for Band Of Gypsies - Side One when I need a Hendrix blast) but those versions are great and I think the two best things on it. jazzbo Posted May 19, 2010 Author Report Posted May 19, 2010 (edited) It's an interesting release. I don't in any way feel it's superior to New Rays of the Rising Sun. It's nothing more than a compilation of loose ends, but a satisfying one for me (I'm a Jimi nut, but my favorite Jimi is the final two years, and this material falls in that time frame, though I prefer material with Billy Cox on bass.) To me this is in some ways representing the type of tracks Mike Jeffry might have wished Jimi would release on album, in comparison with the more adventurous and funky material on New Rays of the Rising Sun, and South Saturn Delta. It's safer, blues-based stuff that Jeffry could see thousands of white people going to the stadiums to hear and see. That said, the sound is excellent, and the digital tricks quite acceptable to me.
