brownie Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 Never caught THIS before Unknown photographer. VOA's Willis Conover looking on! DukeCity Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 Cool! It looks like they're either playing "Crescent" or "Whirleybird." Hard to tell which one. Quote
John L Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Very nice. Thanks. t I guess that Lonehill will be releasing a new Coltrane disc soon: "the Complete Recordings with Count Basie." In addition to that track, it will contain 70 minutes of filler material of the classic quartet in Europe in the 60s (also available elsewhere). Quote

John L Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 It could have been "John's Idea." Quote
Shrdlu Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 Really good to see those pics. I'm glad it wasn't recorded, though, lol. The album Trane did with the Duke was not the best either - Duke was way out of his depth and wisely kept a low profile on that session. Quote
Brad Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 Maybe not anything. Maybe just some posed photos or perhaps an idea that never went anywhere. Quote

So, it just occurred to me that Coltrane did record at least one Basie tune: "Good Bait" on the album Soultrane (Basie gets co-composer credit with Tadd Dameron). Any other examples? Did Basie ever record any Trane tunes? Quote

Free For All Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 I really like the Duke & Trane- each was himself and I thought they meshed in a very complementary manner. It would have been wierd for Duke to suddenly become McCoy or for Trane to become Gonslaves. Quote
tjluke68 Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 I love the Duke and Coltrane LP, especially In A Sentimental Mood - that version just REALLY does it for me... Quote
