fasstrack Posted January 2, 2010 Report Posted January 2, 2010 (edited) Nice piece. I always liked Scotty better in situations away from Bill's trio, though I like that, too. He could bear down. Great talent. Edited January 2, 2010 by fasstrack Quote
medjuck Posted January 3, 2010 Report Posted January 3, 2010 Good story. I'm not sure that the basis for LaFaro's breakout was Motian's ability to keep time. I always felt that Bill Evans kept his own time (even though-or perhaps because?- he had a tendency to speed up), and that allowed both LaFaro and Motian to become equal partners with Evans in the trio and not just time keepers. Shrdlu Posted January 3, 2010 Report Posted January 3, 2010 Scotty was an amazing bassist - probably the best ever, though my personal favorite for years is Ron Carter. Quote

CJ Shearn Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 excellent article. Cool to read how they restored his bass. I think LaFaro reached a middle ground with the way Motian and Bill kept time, and that's what adds to the wonderful floating, it can seemingly go anywhere character the trio interplay has. Definitely Jarrett's trio is profoundly influenced by this, especially since Gary and Jack were members of Bill's trio at separate times. Quote
