The Village Voice has a jazz poll in 2009. How quaint.

Not sure what you mean by "quaint," 'cause I think the VV list beats the hell out of the ones at Downbeat and the other jazz rags. My only complaint is the lack of recognition of some great sounds that came from Chicago this past year. Sure, Vonski, Baba Fred, and Nicole Mitchell made the top 50, but where are Josh Berman (Old Idea), Jason Adasiewicz (Varmint), or James Falzone (Tea Music)? I'll tell you where - they're on Larry's list!

"Old Idea" and "Varmint" are on the lists of some other people who voted in the VV poll. Not sure about "Tea Music."

And where might one find Larry's list?

Nevermind.

Also, through the link to the VV Jazz Poll results in my earlier post, one can find links to each voter's ballot, Francis Davis's introductory piece, etc.

Years ago, I subscribed to the Village Voice. It was not cheap and it took a couple of weeks for copies to get across the Atlantic.

Reading the VV was a pleasure then. So many writers and articles to catch on.

Now I subscribe for free via the internet. Reading new issues takes me a few seconds. Rarely find anything interesting there by now.

anybody else find Steve Lehman to be essentially uninteresting? He seems to be gathering a rep -

While I enjoy his live Camouflage Trio album "Interface," (2003) with Dresser and Pheeroan Aklaff, there is a certain sameness to his attack, his phrasing, throughout. A little bit of that Braxton influence. I think I enjoy this one as much for Aklaff as anything else, really.

Don't really know about anything more recent.

I'm guilty of voting in the Village Voice poll. I'll post the separate link to writers' individual ballots when I retrieve it.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I would bet I spend more on new music than most jazz journalists (easily in the thousands of dollars), in spite of the volume of promos I receive. I've even purchased CDs directly from artists at times.

While I willingly participate in top ten polls, it is difficult to narrow it to such a small number, as there are deserving CDs I've heard

that I omit because of the parameters set. No matter how many promos and purchases and the amount of listening time available, there's no way I going to be able to hear every deserving CD within a year.

Happy New Year, one and all!

The main problem with all these lists is they are predominantly limited to discs received as promos. Most of these folks don't actually seek many out.

That's how I read it as well.
