John L Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 (edited) By now, I think that most of us know about the Japanese Vintage Vanguard LP cover site. Well, here is another fantastic site that I stumbled upon the other day: This is a true virtual museum of jazz LP art, including text devoted to the various labels and artists. birkajazz Edited December 20, 2009 by John L Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 Looks good, John. Loaded into my favourites for later study. Thanks mucho. MG Quote
brownie Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 Long time fan of that site! Obviously they keep adding stuff... Had not noticed that cover before: which reminded me of that one: Quote

brownie Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 No contest! The John Jenkins session for New Jazz was recorded in July 1957 and released a couple of years later. The Danish Debut EP session was recorded in 1960! The Jenkins album cover design is credited to E.E. (the great Esmond Edwards). All praises go (should go) to him! Quote
michel1969 Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 Birka Jazz really did a great job... and many of those covers are very rare, not often seen. Thanks for the link !! Hope they will update... Quote
Jim R Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 It's interesting that this site hasn't gotten more attention. I did a quick search, and found that it was mentioned here in 2005 (a reference to its function as a source for vinyl). There was another recent thread also: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=53186&st=0&p=925374 Anyway, nice site. I only wish it was more comprehensive regarding the various labels it includes. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 I wish they had more (a lot more) of the Esquire versions of Prestige sleeves. But such is life. MG Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 I've been buying records from Birka Jazz since they started as an online shop. It's a good place to go for Scandinavian stuff at reasonable prices. Their grading is solid, and the one mistake I encountered, they sent me another copy and told me to keep the defective one. No record shops do that in the States! Quote

John L Posted December 23, 2009 Author Report Posted December 23, 2009 The images in the scans are strikingly sharp, as if from crisp mint LP covers (in certain cases) or photo shop (in others). Quote
John L Posted December 29, 2009 Author Report Posted December 29, 2009 For some reason, the album covers at the site seem to have suddenly changed from jpg to bitmap files, making them more difficult to download. Quote
brownie Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 I see no difference! The covers still look very good! All on jpg; Quote
John L Posted December 29, 2009 Author Report Posted December 29, 2009 (edited) Brownie: On my computer, for some reason, even though the address is still jpg, when I right click to "save picture," it only allows me to save the picture as a bitmap file. When I right click to save the image you just posted, I cannot save it as a jpg. Can you? I was able to do that last week, but not now. Edited December 29, 2009 by John L Quote
brownie Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 I have no problems downloading and copying photos from the Birka website. Don't ask me how because I am the last person to consult for anything that deals with computer knowhow... I am happy when it works. When it does not, I am in trouble! Good luck to you! Quote
John L Posted December 29, 2009 Author Report Posted December 29, 2009 Brownie: It seems to have been a particular and strange problem with the server that I was using. I am now using another server and have no problems. Thanks Quote
