AllenLowe Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 apropos of this topic, I want to recommend that every American read Dr. John's autobiography - which tells us more about New Orleans and its relationship to American music than 40 showings of episode one of the PBS Jazz documentary - Quote
jeffcrom Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 Today woould have been Professor Longhair's birthday. Not that I'm attributing this to anything but coincidence, but I woke up this morning with an urge to hear Fess's Atlantic recordings. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 Today woould have been Professor Longhair's birthday. Not that I'm attributing this to anything but coincidence, but I woke up this morning with an urge to hear Fess's Atlantic recordings. Well, it WAS a coincidence that I was listening to them yesterday MG Quote
jostber Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 The Professor got that everlasting spirit. His music lives on. Quote
GA Russell Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 I've regretted that I never got to see him when I was growing up in New Orleans. His Big Chief, Part 2 was a hit when I was in high school. Quote
kenny weir Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 (edited) One of my most memorable - and one of the few rememberable - dreams ... I dreamed I WAS Professor Longhair, playing sheer magic for an outdoor amphitheatre full of in-the-groove fans. At least 25 years ago, I'd guess, it was. But I still remember vividly how cool it felt ... Edited December 20, 2009 by kenny weir Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 Fess & Monk are my fav piano players, personality beats perfection every time...although you could say that they were perfectly themselves. Quote

Funny you should say that. There are plenty of sloppy Fess tracks out there, but as I was listening yesterday, I was struck by how perfect every detail of the original "Tipitina" is. Every bass line, piano accent, vocal inflection (including all those nonsense syllables), and that amazing drum groove by Earl Palmer - just right. It's a perfect three minutes of music. Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 Kenny dreamed he was Professor Longhair - I once dreamed I was Bud Powell - or at least playing like him - Chewey thinks he's Lou Donaldson - Ron S think he's Stokowski - is this an unhappy group of guys, or what? Quote
kenny weir Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 Kenny dreamed he was Professor Longhair - I once dreamed I was Bud Powell - or at least playing like him - Chewey thinks he's Lou Donaldson - Ron S think he's Stokowski - is this an unhappy group of guys, or what? If so, not on the basis detailed here - IMO. Now, the dreams concerning my father - 10 years gone the old bugger is, and they still happen, with me waking in a cold sweat - that's anutha matter entirely. Quote
