BillF Posted December 16, 2009 Author Report Posted December 16, 2009 Pops and scratches are part of the whole package but bring some style. I just can't see any virtue in pops and scratches! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 Me neither. I get annoyed by crappy pressings, even when visually they are near mint. Quote
aparxa Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 Just that I don't make any fixation on them. No virtue and not much harm to me, just like wrinkles. Quote
porcy62 Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 Another sick, and chic, appeal of vinyls is the rig where you play them, a nice TT/Arm/Cartridge combo spinning is definitely more arousing than a dull cd box. Quote
Tom in RI Posted December 17, 2009 Report Posted December 17, 2009 I am on occasional vinyl buyer. Generally I am picking up something on impulse (and maybe on Impulse!) and I am lucky to have a shop near me that has a good selection in good shape. Between vinyl and cd purchases and downloads of ROIO things I really can't keep up with everything that I have gathered. Quote
Chalupa Posted December 17, 2009 Report Posted December 17, 2009 (edited) Heavy vinyl consumer, mostly used but I've bought about 40-50 new LPs this year too. Over 300 LPs for the year. I have probably bought less than 20 CDs(new & used)total this year. No downloading. I buy vinyl for a number of reasons - some practical(cost & availability)and some not(nostalgia & impulse) but I'm not beholden to one format or another. Hmm.. on second thought I guess I probably prefer vinyl considering how much money I've spent on my TT and VPI RCM versus the money spent on my CD player. Hell my RCM cost more than our vacuum cleaner(and the RCM gets used more often too! ) Edited December 17, 2009 by J.H. Deeley Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 Damn, Deeley, that's a serious habit! I don't *think* I've bought that much in 09... Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 Damn, Deeley, that's a serious habit! I don't *think* I've bought that much in 09... I know I haven't! 214 so far this year (2 of them on LP), plus one CD still in the post. Never more than 295 (in 2001). I may get another DL or two over Christmas... MG Quote
WorldB3 Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 (edited) Out of all the mp3's, CD's and vinyl I bought this year I seem to be enjoying the vinyl the most. Maybe because I upgraded my speakers and turntable last year or that I have to actually sit and pay attention with the vinyl when its on. All of the OJC's and Rhino 180 grm on vinyl I picked up this year sound fantastic to my ears. Edited December 22, 2009 by WorldB3 Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 Although I prefer CDs these days, I must bring home at least 250 used LPs a year, most acquisitions from shows. Some are gifts and some are upgrades. I almost never buy new reissue vinyl. Quote
Shawn Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 I don't really buy many LPs anymore. The only time I pick them up these says is if they come with either bonus CDs or a card for down-loadable mp3 tracks with it. That way I have the original vinyl and another format I easily use for portability. Quote
martini Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) I'm a regular vinyl buyer. I've never bothered to pick up CD copies of most of the rock & roll stuff I have on LP (Jimi, Clapton, Stones et al.), because the vinyl is cheap and sounds better to my ears. It is often easy to replace, with a few exceptions here and there. Jazz collecting is a lot tougher. These days I like to collect LPs from small labels (FMP, ICP, Incus, BVHaast, etc.). There is a ton of great music that never made it to CD, so sometimes searching out the LPs is the only route to hear the music. And with the decline of CD sales and the rise of MP3 downloads, one wonders about the future of the CD medium. I'd love to see some of the smaller jazz labels reissue their catalogs on vinyl again. In most cases, it would beat what the originals go for at auction. It will likely never happen, but yeah, new HORO or FMP reissues on vinyl (rather than CD) sound great to me. . . .
