New Uptown CDs

as long as this popped up again, let me say that what is REALLY eating at my brain me is that Uptown has 1950s solo recordings (I think; Chuck can confirm) of Jaki Byard, planned for a release which has never happened.

I MUST HEAR THIS MUSIC BEFORE I DIE

yeah, gotta have it, though I am becoming increasingly pessimistic about the chances of it emerging during my lifetime.

Sunenblick claims that the 1940's material is too short for a CD release, and he is looking for something to add to it. I lent him and unlisted 78 by Jaki, and he has yet to return it.

I have a few of these titles on CD. Have you searched around Amazon for any of them before making up this list? As for that Schildkraut date, if it wasn't released back when it was supposed to, I imagine it's unlikely to get released now.

Don't ask me. I've been threatened with a lawsuit if I say anything about Uptown.

Even something positive and in today's terms, "affirming"? (although I somehow doubt that is the gist of it!!! :smirk: )

Must say that I have a number of Uptown CD's and am positive to very positive about all of them. Wish they would re-issue that Frank Wess/Johnny Coles "Two at the Top" date. It's a dandy.

When the original partners Bob Sunenblick and Mark Feldman split, several of the titles ended up with Feldman. He has issued some of them on his Reservoir label:

Uptown 27.09 JR Monterose = Reservoir 109

27.16 Pepper Adams = Reservoir 113

27.17 Don Sickler = Reservoir 111

27.21 Buddy Tate = Reservoir 110

27.22 Joe Puma = Reservoir 102

27.24 Peter Leitch = Reservoir 118

I heard some of the Schildkraut date; Dave played a cassette for me a long time ago (musta been the late '70s?). I think it was Hod Obrien on piano, and Leroy Williams on drums, though I'm not sure. The rhythm section did not jell, and Dave was a hard guy to play with (he liked to turn the beat around and see if the rhythm could stay in the right place; sort of a musical game of chicken). I can't remember the bass player, unfortunately, and I don't think it sounded real bad, but that was 35 years ago. I wish somebody would bootleg it. (thinking about it - Ben Brown on bass? possibly....)

I was also at the Dickey Wells date (Dick Katz was on piano) - weird thing about that was that they put out the lesser takes; Dickey sounded way better on the stuff they kept in the can.

This list was compiled by Mike Fitzgerald (much thanks mike). To my knowledge none of these have been issued by uptown on cd yet.

unfortunately none of these are listed on the uptown website as being available on cd.

27.24 Peter Leitch = Reservoir 118

Ah this is what i was hoping for! I actually have the Pepper Adams! Now I will search for the others! Much thanks!

I'd like to add here that if a title you're looking for is on a Reservoir CD, buy it now. I was told by Gary Smulyan at a gig of his last year that Reservoir is out of business.

Any suggestions as to the best place to look?

You can still buy Reservoir CD's at http://www.reservoirmusic.com/

They may not be completely out of business, but it seems that they haven't made any new CD's for a while. They are selling off their catalogue at $10 per CD.

Thanks for this!! I just ordered 10 titles that I've been "on the fence" for many years. At $10 each, I couldn't pass up the chance.
