Ken Dryden
Uptown has just reissued Philly Jones Dameronia: Look, Stop and Listen, featuring Johnny Griffin plus Kenny Dorham: The Flamboyan, Queens, NY 1963. I've not yet heard both discs all the way through, though I'm impressed with the detailed booklets, which are so full of photos and liner notes that they are difficult to get out the jewel box. That sure beats releases with little more inside than a thank you list to fifty plus friends, relatives and colleagues. Of course, it is nice to be thanked inside, if you're on the receiving end! jazzbo
We've discussed these before. Maybe someone wants to join threads? I don't mind myself. I have them both (from Worlds Records) and they're fine releases, indeed.

Christiern
I never thought of Johnny Griffin and Kenny Dorham as flamboyant queens
sonnymax
uptown doesn't have a website does it?? I can't find one... The info can be found at www.cityhallrecords.com/ CITY HALL EXCLUSIVE STREET DATE 1/19/10 PHILLY JOE JONES' DAMERONIA: LOOK, STOP AND LISTEN Philly Joe Jones led a ghost band dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron. This CD is a presentation of the Grammy-nominated album featuring Johnny Griffin. At the recording session, Griff was prominently positioned in front of the band wearing a white hospital scrub shirt. He asked the band to wave him on if they wanted him to play on more than the agreed upon two selections, and the whole band waved him on. This CD also includes three additional alternate takes, and was digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. Besides Philly Joe, the band features Don Sickler, Benny Powell, Frank Wess, Charles Davis, Cecil Payne, Larry Ridley and Walter Davis jr. KENNY DORHAM: THE FLAMBOYAN, QUEENS, NEW YORK, 1963 Kenny Dorham and Joe Henderson recorded six albums for Blue Note betweem April 1963 and September 1964. This Cd presents a previously unknown broadcast that predates the pair's Blue Note collaborations. In January 1963, the Dorham-Henderson quintet appeared at The Flamboyan located in Queens and named after the casino in Puerto Rico, the club was only open for about a year, but the music lives on. Bright Moments
pretty pricey at $18 bucks a pop.
kh1958
$16 at Worlds Records, with free shipping over $25.
Brad
Thanks for the tip. I may opt for Worlds Records.
sonnymax
pretty pricey at $18 bucks a pop. $13.58 pre-ordered at CD Universe. I'm sure there will be other deals along the way. Even if there weren't, this is one of those instances where the music is well worth the full price. So brew at home instead of going to Starbucks for a few days. Better yet, resist the temptation to buy the latest reissue of something you already own and probably don't listen to more than once or twice a year. jazzbo
Price works out about the same if you buy both from Worlds due to free shipping. And I like supporting Worlds, they're a small outfit with great selection. Good reissues, as one would expect from Uptown. Sound is quite good on the live disc. John L
The sound is fine indeed. The Dorham even sounds professionally recorded - quite remarkable. If you like Dorham and Henderson, you NEED this one, despite Ronnie Mathews painful struggle with the badly out-of-tune piano. One question: The date given in the discographical information for the recording is January 15, 1963, which would make it Joe Henderson's very first. On the other hand, on page 15 of the liner notes, Bob Blumenthal would have you believe that it was recorded in mid-June, 1963, therefore after Una Mas and Page One. I wonder which date is correct? Brad
When I was driving to work today, Sid Gribitz on WKCR played a few cuts from the Kenny Dorham CD and the music sounds fabulous, the guys were in the groove that night. I'm off to order it.
