Norm Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Don't forget to spin your copy (everyone should own one by law) of Kenny Burrell's Have Yourself a Soulful Little Christmas these days. I've been playing it about once a day since Thanksgiving and never get sick of it. But, quite honestly, I can listen to this one in May and love it just the same. Quote

I have an old commercial cassette of it that gets good play during the season. Quote

zootsi Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 OK it's that time of year again! In a few weeks we'll all be totally sick of Christmas music - but right now, how about some favorites? Here are some of mine: Ramsey Lewis - Santa Claus is Coming to Town Charles Brown - Please Come Home for Chirstmas Vince Guaraldi - Charlie Brown Christmas (the whole album) Ronettes - Sleighride Big Maybelle - White Christmas (THE best version ever) Drifters - White Christmas Joan Baez - I Wonder as I Wander Ray Charles/Betty Carter - Baby it's Cold Outside Sinatra - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Quote
Free For All Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Ellington Nutcracker (thank you Billy Strayhorn). Got to have some Red Garland at Christmas too! Quote
John Tapscott Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass - Big Band Christmas (Concord) - really, really good, probably my favorite Christmas CD. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 (edited) Willie Pickens--Jazz Christmas For me, many Christmas albums have one or more cuts that make you cringe when they come on. So if the album is listenable all the way through, that is better than most Christmas albums. For consistently nice background listening, with some interest if you are really listening: Edited December 9, 2009 by Hot Ptah Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Honestly, you can't do better than Organissimo's Christmas tunes for really good seasonal fare that lasts the whole year through. There's a download link somewhere here. MG Quote
sal Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Ella Fitzgerald's "Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas" is my favorite, along with "A Charlie Brown Christmas" Quote

Tom Storer Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 I just picked up Dylan's "Christmas in the Heart" and Carla Bley's "Carla's Christmas Carols." Top ratings for both. Dylan is gloriously kitschy, Bley's is gorgeous and tasteful (Bley and Swallow plus the excellent Ed Partyka Brass Quintet). Quote

DMP Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 Hate to admit it, but Wynton Marsalis' Christmas album might be my favorite over-all. Might even be his best album. And don't forget the MJQ's "England's Carol" and Hank Crawford doing "Winter Wonderland." Quote
