brownie Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 The Masters of Jazz reissues label which has been dormant for the past few years is back in business. They are releasing a number of sets (all 3 CDs) at very reasonable prices. A preview of the various sets can be seen at Amazon.fr. Each set includes three previously released CD from the initial Masters of Jazz series. The new sets are being distributed by Discograph. No details yet on their website yet! Quote
jazzbo Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Interesting, though these don't seem to be the type of releases most of us WISH they were preparing. Here's hoping they can make a move towards their former style, perhaps picking up where they left off on artists. Quote
king ubu Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Wow, that's great! Let's hope they bring back the goodies! Quote
Brad Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 Thanks for the heads up. I wonder if any of these are repressings because I saw a Dizzy set and I think it may be similar to one I bought several years ago. As I'm not home right now, I need to check. Quote

I remember the good old times in Paris, picking here and there in second hand disc stores.... I just checked: I own only 45 out of the ca. 210 cds. For the missing gaps, sometimes I went the Classics way (only master takes), some others I decided to go for different packages/different labels with higher sound quality standards. Finally, there were others where I tried to get a copy of the MoJ cd but simply was not able to find it for a decent price. Edited February 26, 2020 by EKE BBB Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted February 26, 2020 Report Posted February 26, 2020 Some time ago i picked up a dirt cheap copy of MoJ R2CD 8004 "Charlie Christian" at a local record clearout sale. It turned out to be a 2-CD "Best of" of the 8 individual MoJ reissues of Charlie Christian recordings (MJCD 24 to 75). I had figured to use it for the car CD player but as it includes several tracks I do not have elsewhere yet (a.o. reasons because I totally missed the MoJ phase at the time) it went into my collection. I wonder if there were other "Best of"s. I think what may have contributed to the MoJ reissues being overlooked by many (me too - I just must have seen them here and there in the shops) was their incredibly nondescript, bland and uninspired cover "art"(?)work. They look horribly like a bunch of budget labels such as "History" (an Israeli-German co-project) that were around at roughly the same time. As a result, the INITIAL visual impetus to just "spring for them" wasn't there IMO. Understatement is all very well but there was not much to make them stand out even with an intentionally simple "corporate identity" look (contrary to the Classics series - at least they had a wide range of different colors though they can be tiring too if you see a stack of them). medjuck Posted February 26, 2020 Report Posted February 26, 2020 Vol 9 of the Christian set has somethings not found anywhere else. (Or at least wasn't when released.) Quote
Jim Duckworth Posted February 26, 2020 Report Posted February 26, 2020 I really prefered the Masters of Jazz series to Chronological classics as the Masters of Jazz releases featured an artist's work with other band leaders in addition to utilizing broadcast material. The notes were very useful with every soloist identified as well as mapping out the soloists contributions measure by measure. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 27, 2020 Report Posted February 27, 2020 I have quite a few of these, probably close to 50. Thanks to a board member here I got all 19 of the Bechet at once, and they are a fantastic way to collect Bechet. I have all the Christians, all but one of the Pres, all but a few of the Holidays, the Wardell Grays, nearly ten Ellingtons, and key volumes of Basie, Parker, Armstrong, Gillespie and a few others. A fantastic series. I actually think in many cases their versions are among the very best possible cd versions of particular sessions and tracks. I will always have an eye open for these. . . . Rarely sighted these days. Quote
James Accardi Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 (edited) Thank you to EKE BBB for posting the list of Masters Of Jazz/Média 7 CDs. It took me over twenty years to assemble a complete collection, as some of the later discs saw very limited distribution. The list above contains what I feel are the core releases; there are some supplemental items the collector may wish to obtain as well. The Charlie Christian set referred to by Big Beat Steve is part of the “Cabu” collection. These discs had no liner notes, and in most cases not even dates were supplied. But there are many recordings on these albums which were not issued on any of the CDs listed above. (“Cabu”, who is responsible for the art on the covers, is the same Cabu killed in 2015 at the Charlie Hebdo offices.) Besides the Cabu series there was also an 18-track sampler issued in 1996 (MJCD 1000). The 13-CD Duke Ellington “Anniversary” set (MJCD 1301-1313) is fantastic (but, again, there are no liner notes). Recordings supplied by Coover Gazdar and intended for the Wardell Gray series were issued for the first time on CD: sagajazz 53 (Count Basie Septet & Octet “On Film and Live”). Christian Bonnet and Michel Fontanes continued the Billie Holiday series on the “Kangourou” label, the last of which was Volume 27 (February 1958 Lady In Satin The Unissued Takes And More”). == Concerning the missing entries among the high numbers, I asked Christian about this in June of 2011. I wrote: “Towards the end there are gaps in the catalog numbering of the Complete Edition/Complementary Works discs in my collection. Assuming that Billie Volume 17 was the last disc issued, there are 8 CDs I’ve never seen. I gave up searching for these some time ago, as I suspected there were catalog numbers allocated to volumes which were never issued. I have never seen a complete list, so this is guesswork on my part. The eight volumes I’ve never seen are as follows: MJCD 185, 190, 194, 196, 197, 199, 200 & 201. Am I correct that these items were never issued?” Christian replied: “You’re perfectly right concerning those eight “ghost CDs”: they were never issued, due to the bankrupt of Next Music who was then producing the MoJ series. And I can’t remember which artistes they were supposed to concern. This was the end of a beautiful story I was part of...” Christian (“Xian”) was an incredibly nice guy (he passed away in 2017). I trust that he would be pleased to read this thread and hope he would approve of my publishing this excerpt from a private correspondence. Edited March 4, 2020 by James Accardi spelling error Quote

jazzbo Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 I just want to add that there are two three cd sets I have that have a third cd with rare stuff: the Billie Holiday and the Lester Young. I saw both at quite reasonable prices and grabbed them, thinking I'll have nice compilations to spin now and then and was surprised at the content on the third discs which gave me a few items I did not have elsewhere.
