jimmy giuffre and lee konitz

i recently enjoyed 2 small group numbers featuring jimmy guiffre(tenor) and lee konits.

their empathy and collaboration was nothing short of miraculous. hopefully, i will learn that they have a large collaborative discography.

There is a Konitz meets Giuffre album on Verve which is very good.

The Verve was a five horns plus rhythm. It was available on a 2 CD reissue featuring separate Konitz and Giuffre records and a Ralph Burns date. I think Lonehill has since seized its contents.

The IAI album referred to above is called IAI Festival, credited to Giuffre/Konitz/Connors/Bley. (That's Bill Connors.) The 1993 Konitz album Rhapsody has a 19-minute track called "Exposition" by Konitz, Giuffre, Paul Bley, and Gary Peacock.

Norman Granz had Jimmy Giuffre lead and arrange albums for several of Verve stars back in 1959.

Among the albums Giuffre made at that time for the label are:

- Anita O'Day Sings Jimmy Giuffre Arrangements

- Herb Ellis Meets Jimmy Giuffre

- Lee Konitz Meets Jimmy Giuffre

- Lee Konitz You and Lee

- Sonny Stitt Plays Jimmy Giuffre Arrangement

Might make a good Mosaic Select!

I was always hoping for both a Giuffre and a Konitz Verve Mosaic - but I guess that will never happen, as so much of the music was released on Lonehill, Gamit etc.

The O'Day/Giuffre session was in the O'Day Mosaic, so including it in a Select would be against the usual Mosaic policy... but that might be a pretty nice Select, indeed! The Ellis meets Giuffre is mighty fine, too!

I attended that concert at the Great American Music Hall which was special; I've always hoped that the rest of the concert would be issued on a followup disc.
