Rasputin Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 There seems to be very very little information about David Izenzon, the bassist of Ornette Coeleman for a period of 3 years in the early 60's. I would like to know more about what instruments he played, where he had studied and what was it like playing with Coleman. He died in the 70's after chasing a thief (a heart attack) and got a PhD in psychoterapy. Sounds like an interesting man, wonder how come even google failed me this time with concern to him. Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 "He died in the 70's after chasing a thief (a heart attack) and got a PhD in psychotherapy." not necessarily in that order. Did you try googling his name? Great bass player. Quote
brownie Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 Perry Robinson had interesting things to say about David Izenzon in his book 'The Traveler' The Traveler Go to page 140! Quote

Did you try googling his name? Great bass player. Yeah, google is my first source, then google books, and that usually does it. The most complete info about him comes from critic Scott Yannow, but I couldn't reach him via e-mail. I know he's also jewish. Perry Robinson had interesting things to say about David Izenzon in his book 'The Traveler' The Traveler Go to page 140! Thanks! It's interesting, the man started palying classical bass at 24(!) and didn't played jazz before joining Ornette! How crazy is that? Quote
adh1907 Posted December 17 Report Posted December 17 Reactivating an ancient thread, on the sleeve notes to Harold McNair’s Affectionate Fink on Island Records, David Izenzon is said to be collaborating on an LP with Gil Evans. Sleevenotes (by Charles Fox) are from autumn 1965. I wonder what that project was. Any ideas? Quote
JSngry Posted December 17 Report Posted December 17 Speaking of Gil...I recall Izenzon's DB obit mentioning that he either founded or was deeply involved in a group called Marijuana Anonymous. I guess he felt that his chronic was, uh...chronic. Anybody know about that? Quote
adh1907 Posted December 17 Report Posted December 17 Founder of pot smokers anonymous, see NY Times 1979 obit https://www.nytimes.com/1979/10/10/archives/david-izenzon-bassist-antimarijuana-adviser.html Quote
