No-one mentioned Jim Morrison yet? That's assuming he wrote the lyrics. I remember there used to be a weekly feature in the New Musical Express (late 80s), named "Bismillah". It featured dire lyrics from pop songs.

Bismillah was one of the greatest!

I hated the Doors(most boring group I ever saw) but actually thought Morrison was a decent writer -

as for singers, I'm sponsoring a Constitutional Amendment to outlaw scat -

the scatological amendment, so to speak...

The "Bismillah" in question was from the line in Bohemian Rhapsody ("Bismillah, nooo! We will not let you go" etc)

Condemn singers in jazz? Not me. No way.

Point out a characteristic that applies to many "jazz" singers (who I think are really cabaret singers more often than not)? Hell yeah. Why not?

You klnow, I checked out a Jeri Southern album a few weeks ago, the one with charts by Ralph Burns charts and an accordion player, and...I dug it, but I didn't feel it. no harm, no foul, that type thing.

Then, on the same iPod (finally got it up and running!), there was that Annie Ross side w/Zoot. The swing stuff was ok enough, but the ballads were freakin' GREAT. Story-telling, musicality, the whole package. Simply superb. Can't say that I'd ever tought of Ross as a

'balladeer", but I guess I need to re-evaluate that, if and when it becomes relevant to the world at large.

So, Jeri Southern gets a wave as we pass on the sidewalk. Annie Ross gets a wave, a smile, and an offer to carry the groceries.

just to show what good taste I have, both Jeri Southern and Annie Ross are on my blues anthology - Ross singing Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin' ('56) and Southern singing a terrible sexist blues that is nonetheless a blues. She still sings it great.

(Didn't Miles D. have an affair with Southern?)

The publication I work for once won some sort of public-service award from a construction trade group. The plaque is still on the wall. It features, prominently, a silver hammer. So I'm reminded of that song several times a day at work. Make it stop.
