king ubu Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 (edited) ah well ok... found this on the Jaco Pastorius website: Jaco Pastorius - Invitation Warner Bros. 23876 (U.S. compilation of Twins I & II ), on CD as a Japanese Import WB, WPCP 4932 (ubu: it's also part of the European "Warner Bros. Masters" series of digipack releases. I'm still posting this, as others might have stumbled over it... ------------------ Can someone tell me more about these releases? I have "Invitation" (originally released 1983) and "The Birthday Concert", and a bootleg of what seems to be from the same dates on which the Aurex Jazz/Twins releases were taped (what I have is the full set from 1982-09-01 - all but one edited track, "Invitation", previously unreleased). Anyway, Bruyninckx says that the the set from Mr. Pip's, Fort Lauderdale, December 1, 1981 released on "Invitation" was released in its entirety on "The Birthday Concert" as well. But the timings don't match, except possibly for "Reza" (10:02 and 10:36, respectively). Futhermore, "Sophisticated Lady" from "Invitation" isn't on "The Birthday Concert", and the total playing time of the later is much longer as well. So, is this the same date, botchered up on "Invitation" and with complete versions but still not the full set on "The Birthday Concert"? Or are these two completely different releases? The confusion continues then with the Aurex/Twins material: the release "Punk Jazz: The Jaco Pastorius Anthology" (Warner/Rhino, 2CD) contains a few live tracks from 1982, said to be from 1982-09-01 (only an edited "Invitation" from that date was released), as well as 1982-09-04 and 1982-09-05 in Tokyo (and said to be originally released on "Twins I" and "Twins II". So far so good... but then it says that some of these tracks (in fact three of the four contained on the anthology) were also included on "Invitation". To me, the correct version seems to be that "Invitation" was more or less a partial US release of "Aurex/Twins I" and "Aurex/Twins II" (omitting and shortening a few titles). And then "The Birthday Concert" (1981-12-01) has nothing to do with either "Invitation" nor those "Twins" releases. Hence that would mean that "Reza" on "The Birthday Concert" and "Invitation" are two different versions as well, right? Is that correct? So Bruyninckx goofed there? rockefeller center Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 I'm still posting this, as others might have stumbled over it... Maybe you should edit your post because I've finished writing my response before I read your "ah well ok... found this". Don't you ever waste my time again! Quote

king ubu Posted November 11, 2009 Author Report Posted November 11, 2009 Thanks, that site is new to me! And apologies... I'm sure you missed some important rugby or tennis on tv because of me Seriously: quite some tracks on "Invitation" seem to have been edited - how silly is that?! Is the Aurex 2CD set worth looking for, or is "Birthday Concert" better anyway? (I think it's far better than "Invitation") Quote
rockefeller center Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Thanks, that site is new to me! And apologies... I'm sure you missed some important rugby or tennis on tv because of me Hey, I don't watch rugby. Seriously: quite some tracks on "Invitation" seem to have been edited - how silly is that?! Is the Aurex 2CD set worth looking for, or is "Birthday Concert" better anyway? (I think it's far better than "Invitation") Musically, the edits don't hurt that much (yeah, I know, it hurts the music historians). If you're a JP nut Twins I+II is worth looking for. If not, the item is, IMO, way overpriced. I don't know which one is "better" but the Mr. Pip's show is much looser and doesn't sound as bombastic as Twins/Invitation. From the officially available WOM stuff I'd recommend the '82 Montreal Jazz Fest DVD (you get the WOM Sextet here). Quote
king ubu Posted November 11, 2009 Author Report Posted November 11, 2009 Never happened upon that DVD, but you know how it is in Switzerland now... not sure I need any Jaco on DVD, but I've loved the "Birthday Concert" for many years... it's exactly that loose feel that I enjoy! The version of The Chicken there is the best I've heard so far! Both the sax and Melton Mustafa's trumpet solo, and of course Jaco himself is incredible! I'm still not completely into "Word of Mouth"... still needs some time to grow, I guess. Quote
