mikeweil Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 Those Astor Place CDs are terribly hard to come by since the label went out of business. I have the first one, but never saw a copy of the second offered anywhere ... Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Breakthrough is an amazing record, made so primarily by Mobley's intense contributions. The version of Summertime (where Hank uses the Thinking Of Home suite as an introduction) is worth the price alone. I think the Rhodes is limited to 1 or 2 songs. Found this thread via a Google search on Cedar an hour ago and decided to spin this one......it's been awhile. I agree that it sounds pretty good.....although 'Summertime' is the one that I least enjoyed.....just sounded overly harsh on my system. Glad I pulled it out though! Quote
mikeweil Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Just spinning one that I have always enjoyed over the years: Cedar is one of the most consistent jazz pianists since he came on the scene - he deserves a lot more credit for this! Quote
mikeweil Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 I'm aware they're not among his more interesting records, but does anyone here have personnel and tracklist for Mobius and Beyond Mobius? Quote
sidewinder Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 (edited) Cedar is one of the most consistent jazz pianists since he came on the scene - he deserves a lot more credit for this! Never heard anything but an excellent gig from him - and I've seen a few over the years (I think the first Cedar gig I saw must have been 19789/80, with the 'Eastern Rebellion' group with Bob Berg). A nice, down-to-earth and approachable guy too ! Sorry Mike - have never heard the 'Mobius' other than a bit of it on the radio. Would like to check it out again. Sorry Mike - have never heard the 'Mobius' other than a bit of it on the radio. Would like to check it out again. Do a search on My Jazz World Quote

Sadly, Sam Jones had passed away not long before I saw 'Eastern Rebellion' for the first time and it was the excellent David Williams on bass. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 I see there is a new Walton disc out today. From the cover, looks like Jeremy Pelt is on it! Cedar Walton -- Seasoned Wood (Highnote) Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 Sounds nice. I've always enjoyed 'Plexus' on Hub Cap and didn't realize 'till now that Walton wrote it. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 ill never be on a cedar walton kick again because in summer of 1998 i saw cedar quartet for a [club] week staright wed-sat. evenings the only reason was not to go see whole lotta cedar, but beacuse on drums it was none other than master higgins-- tony dumas on bass, ralph moore sax. AllenLowe Posted July 18, 2008 Report Posted July 18, 2008 Cedar was Al Haig's favorite contemporary pianist - next to Chewy, of course - Quote

mjzee Posted May 23, 2018 Report Posted May 23, 2018 I listened today to one of my favorite CDs, Jackie McLean's "Nature Boy." Â Cedar Walton is so good on it, and I got to wondering what he's up to. Â Checking Wikipedia, I discovered that he passed away in 2013. Â I don't think it was ever discussed here. Â Now's as good a time as any to celebrate his work. Quote
